Painting over chrome with satin paint????? Is it durable?

Good evening,
I am hoping to paint all of my chrome pieces with a flat/satin black. I'm a little leery of doing this from a rock chips and peeling perspective. Has anyone had any luck doing this and what process was used? I'm considering powder coating also. What would y'all suggest??? I thank you in advance!

I don’t think that will work well. In my experience paint will not stick to the chrome unless you really rough up the chrome.
Think powder coating would be the way. Don’t know much, but have heard that powder coating can chip. You might want to look at some sort of flexible undercoating, but also don’t know what you want for an end result. My ,25cents worth.

I used a low pressure fine grit sand blast which roughed the piece up to a scuff, similar to fine grit sand paper. Then shot the paint and it stuck well.

You can paint over chrome, but you must rough it up just as you would the sheetmetal for the body. My body man did just that when he painted my otherwise rusty front & rear bumpers in body color. Go for it, do it your way.

I’d love to know how the factory painted chrome trim pieces (some have multiple colors) and what their method was to get paint to stick to chrome.

I painted the freshly rechromed A pillar and upper interior chrome trim on my 66 Satellite with SEM Trim Black after first spraying with self-etching primer. It came out fine and had some stick as witnessed by the clean masking lines when I pulled the masking tape to leave the sliver of exposed chrome - 66 Satellite guys will know what I’m talking about. But I’m doubtful it would survive on the car’s exterior long term.

I understand the common thinking of roughing up chrome improving adhesion.
However just cleaning the chrome properly and using the best quality paint for the application IMO is all that is really necessary. It also provides some reversibility in the future if needed. Not sure how selecting a satin finish matters here, except, making it easier to hide any induced roughness used to help promote adhesion. I am speaking only from my own experience painting chrome bumpers with 2 part oil based urethanes.
Powder coat should also be a consideration if the chrome part is likely to see a lot abuse, seems that would be the most chip resistant, and the most costly solution.

Personally, this black out thing has been way over done. Factory does it, sorry, just can not get into covering chrome into body color or black., but..., it is your car.
