What's the best way to remove the hardened deposits in a heat crossover?

My old 318 was carboned really bad and I used a drill bit to drill through the carbon, then a chisel and hammer.

I took my cast iron manifold (a long time ago) to an auto parts shop that had a large tank of a HOT caustic solution. They let it sit in the tank for 2 or 3 days. No more carbon deposits! Also, the caustic strips off paint, grease/oil, and etc.

Don't do this with aluminum parts as the caustic solution will dissolve aluminum.

Good replies. Open the holes on both ends first with a chisel - hammer.
Now, to find a local parts store that still has a hot tank!!
