Power steering pump wear? (Federal)

What would cause this type of damage?

Its my federal power steering pump that I just took apart as it was leaking from the seal around the shaft.
And then the front plate looks like this...

(I guess just finding a new front plate is a bit of a long shot?)

They are rather unreliable you might be better off to source a Saginaw pump and brackets.
That is what I did.

Ok, I didnt know that. Yeah a saginaw could be an idea.
I just bought a brand new Federal and it sounds like it has sand inside.
So now I have to look inside the new one also too see whats going on.
 
I think the Federal is junk to be perfectly honest.
The Saginaw's are good and give little trouble.
I got a rebuilt pump, hose and a bracket kit etc off 440 Source.
Took me about 1 hour to fit it.
