Last week I traded my prized and heavily modded 2010 challenger which I purchased new for one of my dream cars. I have very limited mechanical skills- basically I am screwed lol. Luckily, she is done for the most part- but we all know how that goes....

My very first question- Is it possible to remove the speedo cable from gauge without removing the dash cluster. Took a quick glance up under dash and looks pretty tight. I don't want to break the housing. bee1.jpg bee2.jpg superbee4.jpg Gauge is stuck at 55. assuming it is the cable. thanks for any input.

Welcome Tim. Great looking car. I'm not a big wheel fan, but it's not my car, and you didn't buy it to me me happy, so have fun with it!
First , I'd take the speedo cable off the transmission, and see if the cable turns, a variable speed drill comes in handy, and have a helper watch the speedo to see if anything happens. Might want to pull the speedometer drive out of the transmission while you're under there. Put a mark on where the drive is positioned so you can get it back in the right orientation. When you pull it out you might get some trans fluid coming out of the hole. The plastic speedo gear might be bad. If all is ok, you can pull the cable off the back of the speedometer, but it's hard to get a comfortable position, but it can be done. Look at the back of the speedometer, and get an idea where the cable is, because once you get your arm up in there it's all by feel. There should be a finger on the white plastic end, that clips on the back of the speedometer. You need to release this if it's still there, and then the cable will pull off.
      Good Luck!

        nice 68, congrats

welcome to FBBO from NorCal Sierras

the needle could be bent, damaged or even just stuck too
& yes it's possible to remove the speedo cable from the back
it's tight as hell, need small hands
gonna' be fun getting it back on too

        I'd highly suggest getting a
Factory Service manual for your car/year & make
Huge benefits of information especially for someone that is a newby

          Welcome.
          Wow thats a nice one.
No it's likely the gauge, not the cable.

Another way is too pull the radio out, and go at it that way, more comfortable then laying on your back on top of the door sill.

I use to reach up under the dash every night and unhook the speedo in our family car and put it back when I parked it back at home... after returning the gas gauge back to exactly where it was so Dad didn't know how many miles we cruised in one night. I forgot once and he quickly calculated how fast we had to be going to put 800 miles on a car in one night!

It's just a "spring loaded" plastic retainer to lift and the cable pops off. That said, as was noted above it would be easier to pull it at the bottom / trans and kill two birds with one stone. You can see if the cable is freely turning.

The other issue really is though, the speedometer needle is driven my magnetic attraction of the aluminum drum it's mounted to and there is no mechanical attachment from cable to needle, so if the needle is stuck your speedo is F....
