Is it necessary to align the bell housing to a 440 block with a 4 speed A833 transmission?

It's always a good idea to at least check it. If it's not within .005", it needs to be fixed. I shoot for no more than .003" on the trans fit and try to make sure the face is as close as possible but it's pretty hard to fix the face unless you take it to a machine shop which is also a good idea. The closer the tolerances the better.

If you just took it off and are putting it back on with no changes I wouldn't worry about it. But if you've changed something, like say align bored the engine, then I'd want to be sure that the bell was centered with the crank.

It is important for it to be within factory tolerance. Especially with a 4 speed. ...................................MO
