My heavy hammer bit me a few weeks ago.

Nasty splinter from a split in the handle.

Last weekend I put a new handle on it.

Anyone ever seen a hammer like this?

It was $5 at a flea market.
I was looking for a heavy hammer and this fit the bill.
The "nose" allows me to get at things that are partially obstructed.
It's great for front end and suspension work.

I'd just like to know what the intended purpose is.

That’s a back out punch hammer. Used for backing out pins in things like excavators and backhoes and things like that. aka. a B&O hammer

Is the new handle hickory?

That makes sense.

It's great for separating ball joints without hitting the dust shields or tie rod ends.

...also mighty intimidating when carried out to have a look at folks who have "mistakenly" pulled into my shop parking area.

I have seen them used in old wooden boats to set brass pins and bolts below the face surface. It was used between a hammer and the bolt.

Some heavy cloth tape wrapped around the first few inches of the handle near the head will help cushion the wood in case you miss. :)
