Registration for Black California Plates

my dad went to the dmv wanting to get the coronet registered, it has original plates and when he went there they wanted to take our original 1971 registration card which is the only proof the car had those plates, is there any way around giving that to them? because it would be cool to have something like that to hold on to

Try going back without it. They can't take what you don't have! It might be a bit more paperwork if you "lost" it. Maybe just bring a copy of it, say it is your backup.

Or you could just ask them to keep it, explain that you collect this stuff.
