My Era too class of 77' baby
I remember filling my Taco-44 Minibike up
for a Quarter... $0.25 cents, for a gal of reg.
I'd collect coke bottles, to get gas,
before the Gas Wars
when I got my permit/licence, gas prices double, then trippled,
went to over $0.59 cents a gal. reg. overnight, then 1974-ish IIRC,
in a years/maybe 2-3 years timeframes 1976-78-ish or so
(Jimmy Carter era) it was $0.99 cents org. for a gallon for reg. or more
$1.09 for Union 76 Ethel/Premium, that I ran in my 68 Charger R/T
by Nov. 1980 (I was 21) it was like $1.59 for the same fuel, rurally
US buying oil/crude mostly from Saudi's (OPEC ?)

I went and looked it up and there's two times in US history where gas was on average around $1/gallon"
1980 and 1989 (it swelled up a little bit in the years in between those two, then came back down).

By contrast, average gas price was about 35 cents when the 'Bird was new.

The Super Bird is new! It took the dealership 10 years to sell it.
****
I like the winged cars by the way. Always have.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, you guys were lucky! Fast cars, cheap gas, easy girls! Wish cruising main was normalized again, I wish there was still that known street that certain activities happened on, and I wish what you drive determined your status.

I wish I'da saved a gas receipt from when I bought my '68 back in 2001....
It was around $1.75/gal. Yeah, in commiefornia and yeah, even after W. had been in office....

Cheap gas yes. I made $3. an hour at the Phillips 66 station back in the early 70's. It took years of full time employment before I made $20, 000 a year. It is all relative. Now my Social Security check is about that.

When sex was safe & cars weren't :carrot:

Well young brother you’re right we were very lucky to have fully lived that era. But I don’t know about - what you drove determining your status. Maybe to a certain extent - but there were plenty of punk *** rich bitch guys that owned cars that were over their heads. Virtually everybody that was in the game had a car - but not everyone was respected. You still had to have your own gravitas to go with it. For the most part that simply meant you had to be a decent guy. I still have pics in my head of some of these guys that whatever class they had was bought and paid for. Not the same as earning it.

Sweet girls, not necessarily easy girls.

Certain things make reflecting back on the era priceless. Part of it was the span btw growing up before being concerned about all the things adult. Fast cars, dates, great songs, outdoor theaters, and drive-ins. Another was being young, healthy, strong, and a tolerance for treating yourself like ****. The good old days are all relative to the generations. Lol, but Father Time doesn’t miss anyone.

This thread Reminds me of how most of us felt back in the 70’s

"Like A Rock"

Stood there boldly
Sweatin' in the sun
Felt like a million
Felt like number one
The height of summer
I'd never felt that strong
Like a rock

I was eighteen
Didn't have a care
Working for peanuts
Not a dime to spare
But I was lean and
Solid everywhere
Like a rock

My hands were steady
My eyes were clear and bright
My walk had purpose
My steps were quick and light
And I held firmly
To what I felt was right
Like a rock

Like a rock
I was strong as I could be
Like a rock
Nothin' ever got to me
Like a rock
I was something to see
Like a rock

And I stood arrow-straight
Unencumbered by the weight
Of all these hustlers and their schemes
I stood proud, I stood tall
High above it all
I still believed in my dreams

Twenty years now
Where'd they go?
Twenty years
I don't know
I sit and I wonder sometimes
Where they've gone

And sometimes late at night
Oh, when I'm bathed in the firelight
The moon comes callin' a ghostly white
And I recall
I recall

Like a rock
Standin' arrow-straight
Like a rock
Chargin' from the gate
Like a rock
Carryin' the weight
Like a rock

Like a rock
The sun upon my skin
Like a rock
Hard against the wind
Like a rock
I see myself again
Like a rock
Oh, like a rock!

I love Bob Seger and that is one of my all time favorite songs of anyone. Like a Rock!

Best thing about him is where he got the name for his band.
The Sliver Bullet Band - but I don‘t know how that came about.

BTW - Are you sure you’re only 25? I‘ve never met anyone your age or even 10+ years older that seems to be as in tune as you are. Yes - you deserve a time machine experience just because ….

You know the legendary Silver Bullet 67 GTX street race car from Detroit?

Do I need to show you my birth certificate? If most of my generation didn’t suck I wouldn’t have to be in tune with the best generation
