Hard to believe it’s been 37 years since I raised this topic in a corporate meeting kicking off “total quality management” in 1989. We were trying to verbalize the company’s values.

At the time, I felt “mutual respect” between management and the guys in the trenches had been key to the company’s success. The owners agreed, and my observation was incorporated into the corporate mantra.

In later years, they stopped living by it, and we went separate ways.

AAAHHHH!!!! The TQM experience!!! Had to endure that in the USAF, and it became a total disaster. Seemed the the higher ups in rank wanted to have it at every turn, and in the flying arena, it never worked. Demming would not have been happy!!! cr8crshr/Bill :usflag: :usflag: :usflag:

It's been nearly 25 years since I raised another topic at a serious Monday morning 'toolbox' strategy meeting..... you could say I gave no respect to the company.

After all the chat about various jobs on the table, it was a 'round the table' open discussion. My turn came and I suggested that we hang a sign on the front door (Glass Bridge in a multi-story office block that housed a couple of major banks also) ... saying "Welcome to Disneyland"

And then when I said that I added that this place was just a Mickey Mouse outfit.

The silence was deafening, other Techs were sinking in their chairs, the Manager went red and was spitting tacks, and the 50% owners (husband & wife) just looked horrified. The other half of the business was owned by Wilson Parking..... known for exorbitant charges etc.

I got a pat on the back from some of the Techs, but not so much the Manager. He was less than complimentary towards me..... he was a ******** anyway.
No reprimand, no loss of job.....I quit a few months after that of my own choosing. I mean, there's only so many months that you can win at spending the most on fuel expenses.

Ugh, TQM was a pox on us at Air Force Plant #4 circa mid-1980's.

Any respect given that I have not earned, is meaningless to me.
Fear and common courtesy are two different attributes but often overlap in these conversations.
Being honest/truthful is the bedrock IMO of earning respect and why it is so rare it seems.

Unfortunately, respect is supposed to be taught at home. Too many parents don’t have respect for themselves, let alone anyone else. The children pick up on this and it sometimes doesn’t trickle down, it’s a hurricane and the children get blamed. We’re supposed to live and learn by example. If the example isn’t at home. You know as well as I, birds of a feather, flock together.

I did the audio for him at a sold out in a College football stadium decades back. The audience/students loved and respected the man, including me.

I'll add, the magic here was a 70+ year old man could entertain for over an hour and relate to 18+ year old college kids and not talk down to them and give them their due was I found rather impressive and respectable.

And IMO why teachers unfairly get the blame for unsocial student behavior.
This week in 2026 is also Teacher Appreciation week.

I saw Aretha live about 1967 in Oahu. She had broken her leg trying to learn to surf, so she was in a wheel chair.
Was at the HIC Arena. Buffalo Springfield was part of the show. Aretha had a good back up band.

"R-E-S-P-E-C-T"
BTW, she had a reputation of being a bit difficult to work with onstage.

Years ago I had a new to me manager who basically threatened my job and as I didn’t know him, other than I could tell he was a dick, I had no respect for him. And then he threatened me saying he may have to make some hard decisions, I’d be happy to share the long version but short version was he sat there sweating bullets when I told him he should make his hard decisions right now. He tried a few retaliatory things, one in a group which had him sweating in public since I’m of the mind if you want to sling mud we should all get dirty.

Left like a month later with a severance package.

When you had him "sweating", it was a good time to call his bluff and upgrade your compensation package to any degree, like at the least "I was thinking about asking how about a more favorable assigned parking space".

I like to study history. Hitler was an extreme anti-smoker, nobody was allowed to smoke in his presence and that was widely known. Hitler needed Finland to remain friendly and supply/allow raw materials to be exported to Germany in WW2. Finland's leader's birthday was to be celebrated by a visit from Hitler during the war aboard a private train. The Balance of power in this situation and who held all the cards was uncertain. It was known promptly soon after the encounter began, the Finland leader in the private salon train car, he lit up a cigarette. Nobody said a word. The outcome of the meeting was a win for the Finnish leader.

Her backing band was led by King Curtis and he was an awesome player and bandleader.

I show respect to people as common courtesy, as pointed out earlier…until they show me a reason to do otherwise. Being honest and trustworthy were things my parents instilled in me and also displayed…I’ve been disappointed by a few people over the years but my good friends are of a like mind.

I also respect people’s skills and knowledge in a different vein.

I have emotionally beat down the bad guys my whole life. I worked for the unappreciated worker. They made me my money. Quality is an attitude, good boss, good workers, usually.... That's another story for another day.

Held a door once for a young lady, she told me, I can do that. I let the door go and reopened it for the person behind her.......... Times have changed, a bunch.

My daughter worked as a teacher for a short time after Covid, when PA waived the requirement for formal certification, as long as the applicant had a four year degree. She had a fifth grader who was a major behavior problem. She threatened to have the police intervene if he didn't straighten up. Kid went to the administration, falsely claiming assault, classroom video feed supported my daughter. He also played the race card, but it didn't work, since she's Asian as well.

She quit the job a month later, said never again. Six months later, the kid shot and killed both his parents. Looked like he didn't respect them either.
