I've been IN this plane, but never flown on it. It's a beauty and a real tribute to the air crews who flew in them in World War 2.

Duxford is a superb air museum, just outside Cambridge. Easy by car, not so easy by train and bus. There is a separate building full of American aircraft, old and modern. Lots of air shows and meets in the summer. I forget which town the RAF Museum is in, but it is a short train ride north of London, also worth a visit. Whilst you are blundering about London, Brooklands air and motor museum is also a short train ride southwest from Waterloo Station. Segments of the original, highly banked circuit are stiill there. If you are there in July, take in the Farnborough Air Show, which alternates years with Paris. I was stationed there for 4 years, "seconded" to the RAF from the USAF. I had Rovers there, a 3 Litre, and a P6B, the B for Buick 215! Cheers

The RAF museum is in Hendon.

Fantastic engines - crazy stuff - like the Napier sleeve valve engine.

Read about that engine here:

Thanks! I have seen that, but not known how it worked. Only the Brits...!
It powered the first Typhoon. The current Typhoon has RR engines I think, with a bit more thrust than the Napier. Somewhere on my bookshelf is the bio of a French RAF Typhoon pilot at the end of WWII. Low level attach against heavily defended airfields. Big b**S low chance of survival. On one raid the other 6 were shot down, he alone survivied. I flew the A-10 Wart Hog (Thunderbolt II) at low level, but with titanium armor, and the magnificent GE 30mm cannon that could penetrate all but a T-72 from a mile away. No more pulling up over the now-excited enemy...! Cheers
