Is sealer really necessary after you have primered and finshed all the bodywork? Also, can the sealer be sanded if it will be awhile before you paint? As always, thanks for the infor.
Just use sandable primer for now, then when your ready for paint, sand your primer, spray your sealer, wait for your recomended setup time and shoot your color.(it's like 20 min.) No sanding is needed if your sealer dosen't set too long. Also there is sandable sealer but I never had much luck with it. (Compleatly dried and would still ball up under your sand paper.) These new sealers today really do there job with preventing rust later on. These guys on here doing their restorations would be able to tell you more on whats what.
Sealer will give you a uniform base to topcoat on, meaning that if some area's are old painted and sanded alongside primed area's, it will prevent the paint from settling into one or the other and provide good long term holdout (shine). Should only be applied wet on wet as khryslerkid mentioned following correct flash times and must be sanded if left beyond it's open time which is generally 12-24 hours. Always follow manufacturers recommendations and don't intermix different systems/manufacturers products!
Happy spraying...
also another note to add is sealer is less absorbent than primer is meaning if you use a sealer you wont need as much paint. the paint will show its color with less coats
Yup, like morbidgoat said, a solid white, grey, black or tintable sealer can save you money on paint. Especially with the new waterborne paints. Some reds and yellows can be weak in pigment and will benefit from a tinted sealer. Some sealers are transparent (we use a transparent sealer as an example).
