Short Shaft/Long Shaft Speedo Gear

Hi Guys,
I've got a 66 Belvedere II with a poly and 727. Pretty soon I'll be changing the rear gear, and will change the speedo gear at the same time. Is there a way to know if the transmission has a short shaft or long shaft gear without removing the gear?

My 66 coronet poly and 727 used the long shaft.

Yours should be the long shaft, short was used in very late model applications and some front drive
