ESPN is reporting tonight that 11 of the 12 balls used by the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game were under inflated by two pounds, which makes them easier to throw and catch in rainy conditions. All of the balls were inspected before the game, so there's no doubt the team tampered with the balls after they were inspected.

The NFL cannot allow cheating like this to occur during a championship game and allow it to stand without forfeiting the win. They need to send the Colts to the Superbowl and punish the crap out of the Patriots if they hope to have any credibility moving forward. They let the Patriots off lightly before and they better not do it again.

Each team supplies ten balls for the game. The team with possession uses the balls that team brings to the game. So, Indy used Indy balls, and NE used NE balls.

I'm a Patriots fan so it's disturbing to learn of this (assuming this was a deliberate act by Patriots staff).

It's odd in this day and age that the NFL haven't devised a system where both teams use the same balls. The fact that they haven't indicates that the teams and the NFL likely prefer the status quo. I'd have to ask why that might be....

I heard yesterday on sportscenter it was just one ball in question.. Now they say all but one..they need to make sure they get it right before reporting. Whenthey don't, it just make things so much more difficult to get to the truth! It's all crazy stuff, but this might be the reason...

Hey Bruz, it really made me mad to here this, but the Colts, which is my wife's team, did not play the game. They just couldn't get it together. They are better than what we saw Sunday. I agree that something should be done and if you cheat you should have to forfeit. It will not happen, something about being fined 25K, Big deal. Larry

I'm a 'skins fan (still and forever)..

SO I won't talk too loudly. But the NFL has to do more than slap teams on the wrist on stuff like this. I did hear that maybe draft round picks might be in the balance, if so good, that would be huge for any team. Remember I AM a 'skins fan! LOL The draft and lack of high picks can bring a team to its' knees.

In a blowout game, I don'thttp://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-videos/09000d5d82651450/Vault-Keeper-The-Snowplow-game think it mattered that much. How about a 3-0 game.

(don't know what happened to the link, google snow plow game, from 1982)

This isn't Belichicks first time cheating. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3018338 - He was fined 500k for that mistake.

Richard Cranium...Patriots spygate/ball deflation started during Bush's presidency. I thinks it's fair to say the crooked Republicans set the bar. Either way, the Patriots should be banned from this years Super Bowl. Better yet, they should take a page from the NCAA book and ban them from all post season play for next season as well...and to think, I rooted for them all season. I've been hoodwinked!

Why don't banks require customers to be patted down before entering the bank? Because customers aren't a risk, robbers are. Same deal here. There's been no problem with the system. It works, unless someone makes a determined effort to cheat it, which is what happened in this case. The system isn't the problem, cheaters are, and this is why it's so important for the NFL to take severe action on this.

              - - - Updated - - -

And why was it a blowout game? You have one team playing a game in a steady downpour with under-inflated balls that make catching, passing, and holding the ball much easier; and another team playing with correctly inflated balls that are hard to catch, pass, and hold onto during a very rainy game. You expect the game to be close???

I'm still pissed about the Patriots filming the other teams. I know that cost the Eagles the Super Bowl in '04. Many players have said it was like the Patriots knew exactly what they were going to do the entire game, and they still had a chance to win. Damn you Donovan McNabb!! It's not a surprise that Belichick will do anything to win. Pete Carroll isn't squeaky clean either. These guys don't get to these positions without cutting corners somewhere on top of the hard work.

In reality, there is NO F'N WAY that 2lb under-inflated balls caused a 38 point difference in a game. I don't give a damn what anyone says. That's pure physical dominance and game planning. Go back and watch the Patriots offensive line beat the stuffing out of the Colts D-Line. That will tell you all you need to know about the game. Plus the Patriots ran the ball 40 times in that game!! That was the difference. They only completed 23 passes total for 220 yards. If they threw for 350 yards in blinding ice storms and snow then maybe there would be more here.

I don't like it, but this is the world we live in. Do you think they checked the balls psi levels in the 50's-90's when everyone was on steroids/coke/whatever else and there wasn't all this 'attention' to detail? I sure as hell don't.

The thing about that story is like all criminal activity, what someone actually gets convicted of is usually a lot less than what they actually did. Yes, the Patriots got caught spying on the Jets, but what isn't mentioned is how they got caught. They got caught because Jets head coach Eric Mangini, a former Patriots assistant coach, knew they would be cheating and dropped the dime on them. Mangini was with the Patriots from 2000-2005, so this videotaping and stealing signs wasn't just a one-game thing, which is how the NFL treated it in the end. This was a sustained effort that had been going on for years. Most Steelers fans know all about Hines Ward's very public statements after their loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game in 2004 regarding how the team felt like the Patriots offense knew the Steelers' defensive calls before the Defense did... turns out Ward was right.

The outcome of the NFL's investigation wasn't one tape of video shot of the Jets, but hundreds of videos that had been shot over the years, which put the NFL in an impossible situation to adjudicate effectively. You can't overturn the outcomes of two Superbowls because who wins? In the case of XXXIX, should the Eagles win, or should the Steelers who soundly defeated the Patriots in the regular season get credit too? So in the end the NFL decided to settle the matter by agreeing to destroy all the evidence so fans wouldn't know how big a problem this was, and the Patriots would keep their record provided they accept their punishment without a challenge.

This ball situation is different because it's been exposed before the Superbowl, so it's much easier to adjudicate and the NFL better make a stand here.
