Hi All,

I'm running a 496 stroker (383 based) with Hooker long tube headers with 2-1/2" exhaust pipes and Magnaflow mufflers. I don't have a H or X pipe in the system or any resonators. This is what was on the car when I bought it.

Wondering if any of you have the same exhaust note under WOT. When I put the hammer down it sounds like a machine gun. it's almost embarrassing. Very sharp, snappy sounding and I really don't like it. What might be the cause of it and how do you change it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Machine gun Mike

Is it popping due to engine miss? Or does it have a fast sharp raspy exhaust note? If it's the exhaust what mufflers does it have? Straight pipe and straight thru flow mufflers will create that exhaust note.

If it's raspy exhaust and not mechanical, i added 2 resonators to mine on either side of the gastank to help stop it... thing sounded like a old mans 78 chevy pickup with straight pipes... hated it

Thanks Doug. No engine problems. Thing runs great just sounds like a machine gun (fast, sharp, raspy) when I put it under hard acceleration. The mufflers are Magnaflows and are not a straight through design.

Yep, you nailed it. That's what it sounds like. I think I will take your advice and put some resonators on it and also an H or X crossover. My 78 year old body and my garage floor don't play well together anymore so this will be fun!

A guy in our town put a pair of Thruch mufflers on backward he like the sound. It sounded like a machine when rpm's got to 3000+.

These are on mine.. from amazon, they are 3.5" i wish i had gone 4.5 but was worried bout room, it helped with the exhaust tone a lot.. (Tailpipes aren't on in the pic)
