Just starting our 512 build. (With my son) Began with removing the poor sealing 496 from our 68 Valiant drag racer. Going to use the best parts from that, along with a 400 block and new pistons. Here's a pic opening up the bottom end of the 496, and of the 400 block we're using.
Chose the 230 block for the large main web supports, as you can see in the bottom picture. Blocks cast before 10-10-71 will have this extra strength around the main bearing supports.

thats cool hope you guys have alot of fun.

Did you sonic check the block?
Doug

Not yet. Going to check the block today, make sure it hasn't been bored already. Is a sonic check important? Required? Bracket race motor. The last 451 we built didn't have that done, and it ran great!
I actually have 3-400 blocks. Only 1 is a 230. The others are a 530 and a 630. Which one is likely to have the thickest cyl walls?

It’s a crap shoot... sonic them all and use the best one.

Got the 496 apart today. Crank and rods look good. 383 block cylinders are not right.

The sonic numbers I've seen lately on 230 blocks? I wouldn't put a dime in one without checking it. Some are VERY thin. Better safe than sorry.

Good luck and have fun. Love my 512 from 400. Which I had the block checked before putting another dime into it! Just had to be sure! As stated better safe than sorry.

Did you get it sonic checked first? How thick do you need the major thrust side of the cyl to be? Minimum? I guess from the front it would be the left sides of the cyl bores?

Below .150 would scare me. One or two cylinders I'd sleeve them.

Well, found out the 400 block is already .060 oversize. So not sure what to do next. Will have the machine shop check it out today, see if it will clean up with a 4.02 size piston and .005" clearance. Icon actually makes a .060 over size piston with a 1.322 C Height.

Machine shop confirmed, this 230 block is .066" over size. I had such high hopes for that one, but that block wont be used. Might work on a 451 street motor, but for a race only 512, it isn't up to the task. 440 Source said don't go over .040 on a 400 stroker. Cyl walls aren't thick enough. So now we dive into the old pile of 400 blocks, in search of a virgin, stock bore block.

Don’t believe anything you hear or read. The sonic checker will tell all.

Ok, found 1 of the 400 blocks is .060 over already. But it also has virtually no wear. Pistons look like new, no ring ridge. The other 1 is .030 over, has wear, and a little cyl wall rust on a couple bores. So Friday we sonic check, and use the block with the thickest cylinder wall, as long as it's at least .180 to .200" minimum thickness.

Ok, here's a few results of the sonic check. Truck block, at .030 over. Looks like the major thrust side has plenty of thickness at the top. No 2 is a little thin at top, at
.186, but that's the only one.

Of we go to .040 over, that takes .005 off each side of the cyl wall. Because it's 30 thousandths over now. If it will clean up at .040 then that's what we'll do.

Had to take this block to .060 over. Some rust pitting wouldn't clean up at .040, so going to .060. Ring sets seem to be limited at 4.400, so will keep looking. I Would like to use the low tension oil ring, with a Moly top ring, file fit.
