I have to much play on the steering column. Most of the play is in the column to coupler. There is also play from the coupler to manual box shaft.

What kind of options are there besides replacing the old coupler for a new one?

Rebuild it with a kit from Chrysler if they’re still available. I use to buy them from the dealer but it’s been a few years. Drill a hole in the housing & install a grease fitting then you can Lube it periodically. The u-joint aftermarket kind are a bit tough on the column bearing but I’ve run those too. They’re just stupid expensive.

Agree on the coupler repair kit. I rebuilt the one on my first gen Dodge pickup. They are nearly identical to the old 60's Mopar car couplers. The repair kit may even be the same. Fixing the coupler took a lot of slack out of the steering in my truck!

Is the split pin installed at the coupler to steering gear box connection? You should not have any movement at that spline.

Before ordering just the rebuild kit, take it apart to make sure the inside of the coupler is not worn where the shoes ride. I have had a couple that had grooves wore in. New couplings are available as well.

I have heard that the shoes only go in 1 way. Possible they may be reversed.

Here’s some pictures from mine that I did just a couple weeks ago. There’s a spring that’s folded inside the coupler to keep tension on the shoes and it’s usually broken. I got the so called rebuild kit and really just used the spring which is not the best quality. The new shoes were wrong size both for fitting in the housing and also too small of a center hole to fit over either the old or the new shaft. Imagine my surprise .

Cleaned everything out and loaded fresh grease and also added the clip on the outside to keep the lid on. Not too much work and really makes a difference. Hopefully the pictures will help.

Does anybpdy know what the spline size is?

I'm looking at the Dorman coupler, part number 425-252 but they say it isn't my 70's Satellite. most of the website don't display specifications/dimensions. I've bought a few parts before which afterwards were the wrong size.
