Hi, I'm new here to the forum. I'm getting my 73 rr shipped from Raleigh to San Diego soon. I live in an apartment with parking in the back alley. I have no other place to store the car and was thinking about one of those storage bags. Only problem is that they are for indoor use only. Are there any that are made for outdoor use? I saw the bubble one but that would draw to much attention to the car. San Diego has no snow, is a dry climate, and only rains during the winter, but not that much. I have a Cal Car Cover for it but I want to protect it from dust and the sun. I would also like something that kinda hides it from view and doesnT create a lot of curiosity. Would one of those bags be ok used outside?

Oh man. A '73 RR parked in a back alley? You may not have that car for long.

Any chance you can rent garage space from a nearby homeowner (check CL) or even make a long-term deal with a self-storage place in your neighborhood?

Back alley isn't as bad as it sounds. There are classics around here parked on the street but I really want to block the view and not encourage prying eyes.

eek....no way i would store a RR in a apt complex in cali....that thing will likely be stripped clean in no time, or out right stolen...

i would rent a storage unit at one of them gated facilities if financially able...if not then good luck with all that.. :(

I pay $100 a month for a storage unit for mine. Kind of inconvenient but will work 'til I get a garage.

Sounds like you should have relocated, then bought a classic Mopar.

The storage place where I park my bird for the winter asked $149/mo when I got the car in 2008. The economy was shattered then, so they were more than willing to talk deals down to $89/mo. When I came back in '09, they honored the same price, and have kept it there every year since then.

If that's not possible, maybe one of these urban-camo paint jobs could keep the car low-pro:

Place here is 165 a month for storage. Really living low on the hog now (although I don't live in the hood) so money is tight and I need to get my car here. That's why I was thinking about the storage bag for it. I could sell it... No way!

I wouldn't sell it but as you said about money being tight is the reason something could happen.. To many others that have the same problem see a nice car sitting around does draw temptation. That is a lot for storage isint there anyone you know, family there that could help you out, maybe even a good natured garage mechanic? Just trying to save you some grief and some old guy with a garage or shop of some kind may want to help you, and might not charge very much. Just a suggestion but maybe worth checking into, you can always go back to your original plan... I wish you luck with it, moving into a new place makes it rough especially if you haven't met anyone yet.

The sad thing is that using a car cover to reduce curiosity is like trying to scare away ants from a picnic by spreading sugar around. :) If a car is worth being covered, it's worth being curious about, and that draws a lot of attention. Plus since you can almost spit into Mexico, that's prime country for collector cars to disappear from.

When I was in the Navy and going on deployment, I put my cars into outside storage down here in FL. They were fairly secure and it costs a lot less than renting an inside storage area.

If the bags say indoor only, it likely means the material cant handle UV light from the sun. If thats the case it'll degrade within a year likely. Put a good outdoor cover over it but beware - many covers arent really 100% waterproof... just incase you're missing some glass or whatever. Might consider a clean / new tarp under the cover if thats the case.

If you're afraid of theft, put a boot on it and take the coil wire inside with you. A heavy bike cable through the the rim might work as well. Just make sure it is highly visible or some numbnuts would be thief will tear your wheel well up before he realizes whats happening.
