so ive been looking to do a 318 build found several articles on doing a budget build with good results. hot rod, mopar muscle, popular hotrodding,...etc all of them recommend using kb167 pistons with a .040 bore bringing the stroke to 3.95" (and all recommend zero decking the block) what i cant find is how much ill need to take off the block to zero deck it. now according to what i could find on the stock specs for the LA 318 and using the keith black deck calc http://www.kb-silvolite.com/calc.php?action=deck heres what i came up with

stroke- 3.950
rod length-6.121
piston comp height-1.81
deck height 9.6

wich calculates to 0.306 deck clearance wich means ill have to remove that to get to 0 deck. has anybody done this to confirm if this is about right. most of my numbers came from google searches and for the most part it was other forums so i want to confirm this before i get the block machined and cant go back any suggestions?

Your looking at a positive number,.306" above the deck. Look at some stroker kits, and I think you'll find shorter rods or pistons with short C.H. that has the piston pin break into the oil ring land.

well from what ive been reading your are going to have to mill the deck (altough alot less than stock pistons) maybe my numbers are just wrong
anybody know what the deck height and rod length for a stock 318 is

heres some of the articles ive been looking to follow maybe somebody can offer some insite

I took 40 thou off of my block. Don't forget to take the same thing off of the Vally end rails. Then another 30thou off the heads. Last I had the machine shop machine my intake to compensate for the 70 thou I'd removed and line up right.

The KB167 is for a stock 3.31" stroke 318,it raises the compression over more stock replacements .The 3.95 number you have listed is actually the new bore size :stock bore is 3.91+.040 over= 3.95".

Stoch rods are 6.123", 318 piston compression heights are 1.74"-1.79", 340's are 1.84". The ones shown in those stroker kits are 1.465", with a stock 9.60" block and a 4.0" stroke crank on the KB calculator ends up at .0119" below the deck. Sounds good for a clean-up cut on the block, big heads and horse power. I like the sound of the 370 c.i. with 3.94" bore over a 3.79" stroke.

Are you looking at this because you have the teen already? 360 blocks are cheap and have a 4" bore.....do some research and you'll see what's available for that bore. Doors open all over the place because just about everyone manufactured and engine using a 4" bore and larger bore engines usually always make more hp. It's harder to use larger valve in small bore engines because of clearance and the smaller bore tends to shroud the valves more. Food for thought....

there is an article in Engine Masters summer edition coming out in may, about a 318 hop up at a reasonable price. not to blow my own horn but my engine is on the cover.

rtsrunner you can order the pistons from kb for .040 over

I realize that pistons are available .040 oversize. The title of your thread is "stroked 318 clearance questions",the KB 167 piston is not a stroker piston. It is for a stock stroke 318.What is the stroke of the crankshaft you are planning to use?If you are planning on a 4" stroke crank (390 CID),Icon has pistons available. They are listed on the United Engine and Machine page wher you found the KB pistons.
