Insufficient space on the sides for the wing feet to be mounted suitably.
 
I agree on the wing mounting. I own a '72 wagon, and while they're "hippy", the quarters don't stick out far enough to mount a wing on. There's about an inch at the base of the rear quarter glass, but there is no 'ledge' between the quarter panel and the D pillar; it's a smooth transition.

Yes, I know, my '72 is a different body style...but the same statement applies. I also think wagons (and sedans) had more body lines in the front fenders, and the nose profile wouldn't match.
