Here's the kicker; the gas guzzler tax is built into the price of the car and for those of us living in states where there is a sales tax, we have to pay sales tax on the gas guzzler tax.

Depending on all the numbers, it does give me thoughts of trading in my '10 Challenger & '13 Boss Mustang. Plus, an added benefit for me is that it would then create an empty spot in the garage for future use.

viper guys still have the edge over the new hellcat ! that's weight vipers are very light with every attempt to keep it light so 1/4 mile wise viper should still win and that's fine I never was turned on by a viper I mean don't get me wrong they are very cool but I always new they would be out of my reach but this new hellcat now this is a poor mans viper so to say so this poor man will take 1:3gears:

Viper is 3300 pounds verses 4160 for and SRT8 392 Challenger. That is 860 additional pounds on the Challenger. Viper also has 13 inch wheels in back that gives it a distinct tire launch advantage. My 96 Viper GTS ran just under 12 seconds at 123 at about 500 HP and on Hoosiers. I am betting this Challenger will run under 12 seconds from the factory and deep in the 11's on drag radials/slicks.
An automatic with launch control/traction control pretty much takes the "good driver" part out of the equation. It takes a really good driver to consistently launch a six speed as track conditions can widely vary on the same track on the same day.

Still have not seen the power and torque curves. The Viper has gobs of torque at very low RPMs.

That is soo true. In '07 I went looking for a GT500 Shelby Mustang and they all had the "whoppie!" sticker next to the window sticker.

I was kind of pissed, with all the salesmen giving you no time of day with the cars. So I bought an '07 GT 5sp instead ($25.5k), and threw a Saleen 12.5lb blower ($6.5k) on it. Best thing I could have done. In 09 I got 3 grudge matches at Sears Point vs a GT500 and beat the guy 3-0.

I've got 81,000 miles on my 07 now, with a lot of grins per mile. I don't think I would have driven a GT500 nearly as much. That being said, my car will never be "worth anything" as a collector in the future, but they built so many of those GT500s I'm sure I could get one with low miles on it 5 years from now.

That Hellcat is awesome. If I could get into one, I would love it! Whether they will keep the high pricing in the used car market will depend on how many are built. If they don't build many, you could end up in a situation where they don't really go down, just get older and have miles on them (happened with the 1993 Cobra Mustangs, and 03-05 Ford GTs).

I think the Hellcat is wicked, and color me Envy Green of anyone who puts one in his garage!

Drag radials maybe. '13 GT500s are in the high 11 sec range off the showroom floor. The extra power from the Challenger is negated by the extra weight vs the 500. Might pull more mph, but doubtful ET will improve much if any.

Motor trend put the mustang at 3871 lbs. So it will be in the neighborhood of 400 lbs difference between them. Right off the showroom floor this is going to be a tight race. But I bet its easier to lose a couple hundred pounds off the challenger than it is for the mustang to find another 50hp.
