Just broke in my 493 wedge ready for her first oil change .warm weather approaching. Engine builder likes the valvoline vr1- oil it has high amounts of zinc and phosphorus. Anyone running synthetic oil in there weekend worrier/ cruiser? Thinking of running the vr1 20w-50 question is synthetic or conventual ?

10-40 Amsoil Signature. High Zinc. Only 2 true synthetics are Amsoil and Mobil 1. Amsoil has seal massagers that I prefer.

VR1 is great ZDDP wise. The only thing you have to worry about is extended drain intervals, or lack of. Racing oil additive packages are not designed for normal mileage intervals. You will have to determine how it does in your engine, send your drained oil out for a used oil analysis at a lab. Only way to be sure otherwise it's just guesswork.

I've been running Valvoline VR-1 in my 440 for a long time with no problems. I would advise using the 10-30 where you live because the 20-50 is pretty heavy for cold starts. I would only use 20-50 for a race car or very hot climates. SlinktRR is right on that racing oil needs to be changed often. I wouldn't go over 3k miles or a year on change intervals.

Used GTX 20-50 for years until I saw what it was doing to my bearings. Don't know if it was the oil or the weight but was told heavy weights are not needed. Today I use Rotella 15-40 in everything and everything is 100+k miles....

X2 on the Rotella-T. I've used that for over 20 years and have had excellent results, along with WIX filters.

I would recommend a conventional oil for your first oil change, then semi-synthetic for the next one, before moving to full synthetic, if in fact you plan to run a full synthetic oil.

Valvoline 50 racing change at 1500 miles now have 160000 mile bears look new NAPA gold filter.
Crane did not recomend multi wt oils for their cams when installed. Do not know about now.

Been using the Valvoline VR1-20W-50 as long as I can remember and I have always run flat tappet cams. My brother uses the VR1 synthetic and he likes it but myself I have not used the synthetic just the regular VR1. Ron

Rotella T is no longer available here locally. No body stocks it and the new stuff doesn't advertise to have a high zinc.
Am anticipating going to the VR1 which is readly available.
