Tailshaft weight

Does any body know what purpose the weight on teh transmission tailshaft serves? Mines loose and I'm contemplating just removing it.
 
It's supposed to dampen vibrations....
 
Hey Cranky- correct on vibration dampener- got to know where to get my own AARP card!
