What year did they stop using the tapered 8.75 rear axles?

Late 1964, early 1965
so if i wanted to ditch the tapered 8.75 in my Polara, what'd be the best 8.75 year and body type to swap in?

Also, how hard is it to find the hubs/drum combos? I've looked online for new drums/hub assemblies but can't seem to find any. Everyone seems to just sell the drums separate.

There are several ways to go about this.

You can find a 1965 rear axle assembly and swap it out. Hard to find and they can be expensive if you do. Useing any other year B body housing will work but they get wider than the narrow '62-'64. You have to watch the back set on your wheels.

Convert your drums to the newer style pull off drums.

Call Cass at Dr. Diff and he'll set you up with the correct lenth "newer axles", green bearings and studs. It's what I did on my '62.

I thought about using the A body rear I have in the shop.

that looks simple enough. I need to replace the studs anyway. I may just do that then. Thanks!

Actually, you may find later year rearends to be narrower than your '64. I swapped a '68 GTX rearend into my '64 Belvedere and it's narrower. The '64 B Body rearend is one of the wider years. I can't verify these stats, but I do know for a fact my '64 tapered axle rear is wider than the '68 GTX rear I swapped in.

I just did my Jeep gladiator. Use a 11/16" hole saw with the drill bit removed. Cut through the swedge on the drum about .060" deep. Drum will come off. Yes the holes are larger. Clamp load of the wheel is what holds it all together anyway. if it really bothers you redrill the drums in a different area. Alternately Green style bearings with the proper length axle shafts will bolt right in. You must use Green style bearings as there is no room for an axle seal in the old style housing. It's not deep enough in the bearing area.

You are absolutely correct. The '64 is the wider (flange to flange) B body axle housing. I've been working on the '62 too long.

(Taken from the link in my last post)
2070539 62-63 B-body, flange to flange: 53-1/4"
64 Max Wedge Parts Manuals list four different axles for this housing:
2070573 741 case w/o SG 30-1/2" overall
2404003 742 case w/o SG 30-1/2" overall
2070695 741 case SG 30-7/16" overall
2404050 742 case SG 30-7/16" overall

2404271 64 B-body flange to flange: 55-5/8" (Hollander est) except 1/8" - 1/4" narrower than 2070270 housing Max Wedge axle 31-1/2" overall

2404143 65 B-body flange to flange: 54-1/2" uses axle 2404223

2643409 66 B-body flange to flange: unknown, thought to be narrower than 68-70 B-body

2852838 68-69 B-body flange to flange: 54-15/16"

3432295 70 B-body flange to flange: 54-29/32"

3507502 71-73 B-body flange to flange: 57-47/64"

I had a '64 many moons ago and I swapped out the original rear for a '70 Dana and ended up with more tire clearance than what I had. (H-50s!)

I also have a 1965 Belvedere housing, new Yucon axles, assembled with new tapered bearings, new spring perches (not welded on) for sale. I am located in midMichigan.

Check the A body rear as it might be a 4 inch bolt pattern. Just a thought.
it is, but its probably cheaper to order the 4.5 axles from dr diff than finding a complete 8.75 from another car?

pm me your price and if i decide to switch, i'll get with you

This chart shows all 62-70 B body with 8 3/4 to have the same track width. I haven't seen any other charts listing track width. Maybe it's right? http://www.mopar1.us/875rear.html
Not sure thats accurate. this is what moparts shows

"B BODY"
'62-'63= 58 1/2" (And '64 Max Wedge)
'64 = 60 7/8" (Exc.Max Wedge)
'65-'67= 59 1/2"
'68-'70= 60 1/8"
'71-'74= 63"
'71-'73 wagon= 64 3/8"
