I am tearing down the 318 in the 72 Charger - Original engine, but I want to see if I can tell if it's ever been apart. I don't think it has, but don't know for sure. There was an aftermarket intake and carb, but all else looks original from the outside. Pulled lifters. Do they look original? Engine has 127k on the clock.

Any other things to look for during the tear down to tell if it's ever been apart?

thanks in advance...

Lifters have the same wear pattern as the ones I just took out of my 361.

Hard to tell, but if your looking to reuse them, don't. A number of them are trashed (dished). Replace the cam and lifters as a set.

Hard to tell for sure, but those lifters look original. I suggest the cam and lifters be replaced. 440'

They still have the nylon coated cam timing gear
in ‘72?

if it did and it does that would signal its pretty original

my nylon cam gear took the car off the road at 112k

Had em in 73. Mine went about the same time at 100+. Bent a few pushrods.

mine still ran...barely... there were some very small nicks on some of the pistons about 1/8” long

no other damage; got luck I guess

Here an old one on a 383 with like 200k on it

go to 37 minutes in to see it:

OK got one head off, here's some pics. Seems original to me...
