For all practical purposes I will refer to this man as my son in law as his wife, my cousin is as close to being my daughter as close as close could possibly be.
On May 23, 1970 Cambodia , my son in laws 24 year old father a captain and West Point Grad was I believe taking off and was under attack. His copter was hit by a RPG hitting the side of the co pilot who was killed immediately. The copter crashed to the ground and troops were able to recover the captain before NVA soldiers got to him.
He was removed and brought to the safety of a bomb crater, medivac were unable to land due to intense firefight . The young captain never regained consciousness and died in that bomb crater.
47 years later my son in law was able to connect with the very solider who was part of the group who were able to recover the mortally wounded Captain. During a phone call this combat veteran was able to tell my son in law about his fathers last hours on this earth and he also told him that his dad did not die alone
My son in law's mom was a widow with a 6 month old. She went back to college while her in laws babysat their grandson.
I wondered how they felt when they looked at that young child who is the exact image of his father.
Eventually she remarried and it was to a Navy officer who later on adopted the young boy.
My son in law is active in the Gold Star organization and also with local VN veterans groups. On memorial day weekend 2016 he was invited to a Sunday brunch with a group of Gold Star families at the invitation of the POTUS, held in the White House. He also was invited to his fathers 50th reunion at West Point.

Memorial Day.
An observance and not a celebration.
That's what my father always said.
(About this wedding anniversary as well.)
Commanded three minesweepers in WW2.
Sort of grates on me to hear otherwise.
Just heard it wrong on the radio.

Yup, from all the advertising sales on TV and radio to people having parties......not real sure they even know what the day is really about.

I thank all who have served our country. If not for them and their service and sacrifices we would not have our freedom everyday! Thank you to all our service people.
