Ticking from engine bay? 361.

Any ideas on what is causing this?

hard to tell..... exhaust leak driver's side? Have you had this engine apart recently? Maybe try a mechanic's stethascope or a piece of pipe pressed to your ear to narrow it down. Could be as simple as a slightly bent pushrod or worn rocker arm on one valve.

Only had the valve covers off... I am not an engine-savvy guy. But open to learn.

I sometimes use a wooden broomstick handle
as a stythescope.
Rest it against what you want to listen to
with your ear against the stick,works great.

I'll second a stethoscope. It'll lead you to it like a geiger counter.

If it's an exhaust leak (Which it sounds like it is) a length of hose is better than a stick... Or a long screwdriver... If using a stethoscope try pulling the probe & diaphragm off so the hose is exposed....
