We finally got some decent weather so I figured i would get around to checking out my timing chain. My 71 383 RR has over 123k miles on it so i figured i would replace the chain and gear set. I am guessing the chain was stretched looks it to me but what do I know. Never did this before. I included pictures of it. Sorry about quality. Bending over trying to hold chain out and take pictures. Taking pictures crippled me up more than working on car. I want to thank all of the members of this group. With out your knowledge from looking at past posts and the help regarding removal. I wouldn't of attempted it. now i just have to wait for parts to arrive. At least it will allow my back to calm down while i wait. Can you tell by pictures if it needed replacement? Big shout out to you all.

What do you think? Is it worn out?

The factory service manual provides guidance on measuring slack and replacing.

It has 123k miles on it. It doesn't owe anyone anything.

Throw a new chain on it. You already got the hard part done.

I don't think that is the original chain in a 1971 383. The cam sprockets had nylon plastic teeth in that time, if I remember correctly. I know my 1970 440 had the plastic, because it came apart and the debris clogged the oil pan pickup screen.

Now why would you put a new chain on old worn out gears. Timing set components are manufactured to work together.

Agree that is not the original chain and gears.
