Use Servo to control Speedometer needle

Anyone done it? Was trying to salvage a speedometer last weekend where the magnet was rubbing on the speed cup. The whole cluster got run over by a truck or something because the cluster housing was bent pretty bad. I'm guessing something got bent in the speedometer because the bushings and spring looked ok. Anways i disected the speedo and tried tweaking it to no avail. It got me to thinking if the needle could be replaced with a little servo motor, an arduino, and an IR sensor to count the rotation of the shaft that holds the magnet . Could be pretty cool if one could get it to work.
 
I think you should research/do the conversion. Cables can be a pain and new tech is very often better.
