Bought a hood a few months back for my 70 Cuda project. I knew it had several coats of paint on it and was going to be a PITA. Yep found 3 coats of paint under a coat of epoxy black and definitely a PITA. Guess I know what I will be doing for the next few weeks

Thats a lot of work. You could of soda blast it or sand it smooth and then coat it with epoxy? Show car? I scuffed my charger and then epoxy coated it. Mine is not a show car.

You're being too picky. You're so lucky that you can find a nice straight hood. Period.
Having to strip it leaves you with the satisfaction that it will be prepped right. Put some
80grit paper on that D.A. and Get-Er-Done. It will look beautiful when you're done!

Ha! You should see the A 12 hood that I am trying to save!

It’s not a show car and I am glad it’s rust free and fairly straight. I still have several weeks before it’s got to be ready. So steady as she goes with stripper for the top coat then the DA with 100 grit

my aar fiberglass hood had a 1/2" bow in the center, did surgery on it, cut out the 10" factory L brace and installed a 28" 1x2 steel and fiberglassed it in. Its just time and body aches, when its done its done, if you do it right. Good luck.

If you love it, then take your time and do it right as what I say, pride is a mighty thing, and the respect of others is even more precious as pride

As being a lifelong Chrysler mechanic I tell these younger guys I work with that you have to have pride in what you do or you’re just doing sh** work! And you will probably be doing the same job over again

I've learned it's faster, cheaper, and easier to get a repop when possible.....even if it needs a little tweeking

most 55 year old hoods need this

What he said^^^^^!! I found big mouse nests inside my Charger hood when I took it apart

Painting is not my strong point. I do okay on the boat bottom with anti fouling paint.

Grab some of these off amazon... they work very fast and wont hurt the metal, and less mess

Paint stripper discs

You can do that whole hood in a hour or so

I used those exact ones when I did my W350, they do make short work of it, a buddy painted it for me if I did all the prep work and when he saw it, he had me go over everything with a DA, I think 240?
Here’s pictures of what it looked like after the stripper and after the DA and a little of my “bodywork” lol

I thought they deducted points if an AAR hood didn’t have a 1” bow in the center of it.

8^}

This was my choice. Worked really well. Stripped with the abrasive drum and went over it again to prep for paint with the 120 finishing drum. I did nearly my whole car using it, plus two hoods from daily drivers. My 65 hood and decklid took about 3 hours each from start to being prepped.

I have used the purple stripper discs before when I cleaned the entire bottom of a 70 RR with undercoat. They worked great. A friend just loaned me his SCT tool but the black top coat epoxy just gums it up. The stripper aka Dorothy I like the best for removing the top layer
