Does anyone have a good recommendation for an exhaust set up for a 66 charger with a 440? Do I just buy a standard kit and get custom down pipes? Thanks.

I am sorry sir but you lost me here, there was no 1966 Charger with a 440. A 440 was not available until 1967. Regarding your exhaust are you wanting to go with stock manifolds or headers?. If headers may I suggest TTI, EVERYBODY raves about them. Not sure if this will help you out some..... https://www.ttiexhaust.com/MoparClassics-Exhaust/Subcategory.htm#X-pipe.

BUT normally on our cars we have the exhaust custom made, here are some examples. On one of our cars we have Hooker headers then a custom made 2 1/2 inch system with H pipe, on another one of our cars we have a TTI full exhaust kit, and on our 3rd car (our 66 Charger with a 383) we put Hedman headers on it and are most likely going to have the exhaust system custom made. Here is my build thread if you would like to follow it.....
https://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/threads/so-it-begins-1966-charger-restification.182338/. The cars' original exhaust when we got it had the turn down tips BUT was not original to the car.

You helped a crap ton. Love your build. There is not a lot of clearance around the steering box for the exhaust. That part makes me nervous. But I am excited to see what I can get built

Thanks I appreciate it, it means a lot. I hope you keep following it. The Hedman headers are new to us as we never ever used them before. On our Charger they did need some modifying (assuming that is what you are planning to go with), it was hitting the steering box on the left side and the right side it was hitting the transmission pan. Both of those problems are now resolved.

No problem man! I will definitely keep following along. I love getting ideas and stealing them for my own glory! (No shame, haha). What modifications did they have to do exactly? Did you have to decrease the diameter of the pipes?

Thank you and that is great to hear. We are gonna be guilty of borrowing ideas as well as you kind of mentioned, here is an example. We saw a '66 Charger at a show in Michigan and really liked the red roof stripe and red-line tires with Mag 500 rims so those are now a couple of the plans with our car.

No decreasing diameter at all luckily, just used a bar that I believe is in the picture I got and banged onto the header an inch or 2 with a rubber hammer if I remember right on the drivers side and it now clears. As for the passenger side, same thing really with the bar. We just bent it away from the pan. That is mainly the mods we had to make, no cutting the headers or anything.

As for your car you may have no problems clearing your steering box as a 440 is a higher up engine if that makes sense, that is if you go with Hedman's like we did.

I have a 67 Charger 383. For a street build I highly recommend TTI headers and 2.5” exhaust. I went 3” and x-pipe, but 2.5” is lots and h-pipe is a more original sound/preference. Bite the bullet, get the best, never look back. Use step clamps instead of the supplied clamps.
