so im getting ready to buy my head gaskets and was wondering what others have used for aluminum head and iron block. i have used fel-pro 1009 but i dont like the grove left by the mettle ring for the cylinder bore seal.

    what do you use ?

Cometic gaskets work, are re-usable to a degree and come in many thicknesses if you are looking for a certain quench/cr
You will also pay out the nose for them.

The 1009 is great for a zero deck or just in the hole engine with closed chamber heads. I'm running them on my iron block, aluminum head 440 without issue.

Yea the MLS gaskets were expensive as hell, but enabled me to get my compression height where I wanted it with the cylinder bore size I needed. Just make sure your surface finishes are good on heads and block as the MLS gaskets require a decent finish to seal correctly.

What he said if the head and block are to cometic standard
              How thick
are you trying to adjust quench?
the .028 Mr gasket works and does not take quiete the finish as the cometics but not for a bad deck build
That's what rebuilder gaskets are for

i ran those also but the cylinder seal ring etched a grove in the head surface and i dont want to hurt my heads. so going back to the street witch i will drive the hell out of it and road trips i don't want to have to touch the engine for 50000 miles. and i read my notes from 2001 not to use a mettle ring seal head gasket. when i raced the car i would remove the engine every 200 passes and check every thing. i stop racing in 2006 so that was 200 or so passes .

I ran dead soft copper with hylomar on my last alum head/iron block hot rod combo. Worked very well. I will probably go mls on my next engine.
I used whatever I could get, for my aluminum head, iron block 33 straight eight.

I see no reason to run an expensive head gasket when I constantly use aluminum heads and the $16.99 Fel-Pro 8519PT1.......even to 12:1 compression and 850 HP..........with NO failures.

Only reason I ran the Cometic gasket is I needed to use it and its thickness to dial in quench and compression height on a motor that had previous pieces and wasn't at zero deck. Never had a failure with the standard FelPro gasket myself either. They make good shit for sure.
