10k seems on the cheap side and I'm no body/paint guy...but the cost of good paint, labor, prep materials etc.

Lol better said is, most have the money but don't want to spend it, my car has its original paint job and it bugs me when people lean on my car or put tools on the fender when im at the track, if I had a $10K paint job I'd probably break someone's neck Lol.

I would have to estimate 700 hours to do a classic car paint job. That's 7000 right there. No surprises. Then at least 3000 to 3500 for supplies.

So without being a smart butt. I would have to say "everyone that doesn't do it them selves or wants a good paint job. Notice I didn't say excellent paint job.

That's one reason I'm keeping the 'patina' look, I can't put that kind of coin into a paint job... especially since I take the car out to road race it a couple times a year.

A lot of people have told me that I should keep it like it is, that they love the patina.. and that works for me because it fits my wallet! haha

Patina is in right now. If you break it down there is much more than paint. Most shops charge at least $100-$125 a hour for labor.
Then the cost of materials, sand paper(or should I say $and paper) then primer, blocking leaves most of it on the floor.Guide coat, sealer, base, clear, etc.I understand the cost of paint is very high.So is masking paper and tape.
Then what it costs the shop to even open their doors. Water, electric, insurance, cost of heating the building and paint booth.
My friends body shop,he told me that he pays $1200 to $1500 a month(or more) for electric and at least that much for gas for heat in the winter.
Oh what if you need body work ? floors, trunk, quarters, it all adds up.
20 years ago the cost was in the $4000 to $6000 range. If you wanted a good job.
                          I'm with you 65RoadRacer.

But I think the confusion is in what we are talking about.
                            Paint Job vs Restoration.
Paint job to me is me wet sanding with 400 grit. Taping up and painting. Sanding the clear with 800 grit. Re clearing. Buffing and delivery. Yes that service is about 100 hours.
Restoration. Which is all these old cars category. Untils way more. But we all know that.

What type of paint job are we talking about first????

I have been in paint prison many times and painted cars myself.....10k is cheap these days from a average shop with poor conditions.....the higher end shops you can triple that amount and higher.....

These are key reasons why the hobby is dwindling down.....

Even doing it yourself and buying tools, materials and paint is expensive.....not a lot of people can do that....

I am so off on my math. Guess that's why I just spray paint. And the wife handles the money.

I was quoted $7000 by restoration shop near me. That's to sand down current paint reapply body filler if necessary and spray.
