I turned on wipers on my GTX and they worked for,a while, then there was a fairly loud mechanical noise and the wipers no longer move but the motor remainex running. I think the blades and linkage are ok, but when I went to buy a new wiper motor unit, I found them high priced and not certain the ones I did find will work with the variable switch. Is it possible that I may just need to replace a gear or part in the wiper motor assembly?

It sounds to me as if the wiper "transmission" may have broken. You may wish to hit up the parts for sale forum, there's one on it now.
Oh, and "Howdy" from "Big D."
