Is the hobby dead or just broke?

Easy, Easy......

72 is for sure gaining as people figure out it's basically the same as 71.

Even some stirrings for 73/74 starting to move up, esp those Roadrunners.

Careful about 75-79.....

I find the different 1972 strategies fascinating.

Plymouth kept Roadrunner and added the dual badged RR/GTX (while quietly dropping GTX as a separate model), but you couldn't get a 318.

Dodge seemed to downplay the Rallye, but you could get a 318 in one.

I also find it interesting how many 318 73 RRs you see. Seems like they're everywhere.

73 was the all time high production year for Chargers.

This is just bullshit. It's the same bumpers different brackets. What do you think people are snatching up when they can't find a cheaper way into a charger. Look on eBay , you won't find one under 8 k. They will bring more money before the bottom falls out , and it will. You want undesirable? Try a 75-79 b body

I can't see myself ever buying a 75 bbody, lol...

There are a lot of 71 up b-bodys for short money, any running driving car is gonna be worth something, 4 door noves sell for $4500, doesnt mean they will hit mid 5 figures anytime soon.

I am not too fond of cars that dont appeal to me, and I always felt the 71 up bodys, and 69 barracudas, and old savoys and such had value because they were related to the 78-70b and 70-74e's. When they got really expensive the others caught a little slidig curve boost...

Not saying no one likes them, and I like a few when done right, but they arent my cup of tea.

If there is a mopar hell I am going for the amount of 71+ b's I ripped the disc brakes out of, big blocks (if applicable), 727's, and junked.. I mean no rot running cars, literally cut out the front suspension, motor, tranny, and the rest got crushed..

As You know, I happen to love the lines of 4 door Coronet's, the quarters without the dummy louvers stamped in...they are stiffer and even lighter by a skosh than 2 doors(a 68 4 door Coro w 318 , shipping weight,,,,3225 lbs) & the huge bonus is the majority haven't been beat to death under hard driving & track days for a good portion of their life like a lot of the two door variants undoubtedly have been....except maybe the cop cars. If I can muster the bux for another B & make a project, it's def a 68 or 69 Coro 4 door I will seek. Def more economical than 2 door also.

A-Freaking-Men!!!
The two doors when I got into cars were priced WELL beyond what this chump could afford. Next best thing.. 4 door!!! in my opinion much better body lines. I love my 66' 4dr. The thing is.. Sure the "classic" muscle cars are getting out of normal peoples price range.. Just change what you're looking for to something that suits your budget! You can make anything cool (except a K-car.. you can't make that cool).

I have no problem with 4 doors, same car and can do everything that a 2 door can. BUT everybody likes what they like. That's why we are all different in ways. How boring life would be if we all drove new Camaro's.....

Here at Sled City Fiberglass last year, July and early August were kinda bleak in sales then the rebound hit in mid October and I had my best ever year. There are a lot of 4 doors turning into 2 doors and a few altered wheelbase cars being built also. My Hemi and Max Wedge scoops are big sellers also. The hobby is not failing, it is taking on new projects daily, and the cars keep coming out of the woodwork. And what do you think about the new 800plus hp from the new Dodge Demon?

It should be mentioned that a fair % of the most popular "new" muscle cars look like what? The OLD ones! Retro Mustang, Challenger, and to a lesser extent the Camaro. We likely will see the car's body morph to newer lines like the Mustang has now and maybe the Dodge boys are thinking the same with the Challenger as you only can repeat the same body for so many years. Thunderbird tried some retro look of the '57 Bird that was a bad act overall as did GM with a GTO that looked like...well not like a GTO. Another flash in the pan. Ford did well with the Stang as did Chrysler with the Challenger. Why...they looked a whole lot like the originals...

It's been 47 years and the new Challenger is still the best looking of the retro lot IMO. Design of the 70 'Cuda will always remain a home run. Timeless brawn. A beautiful and scary beast.

That Ford act was gross....gag me with lady gaga
Sure wish Daimler would reenvision the 300 SL Gull Wing with the triangulated tube frame, all metal without the bogus plastik **** construction of today. I love today's engine, suspension, brake technology but the cars are built out of dogshit. Terminally planned. Dodge should build an all metal 3200 lb B Body again instead of plastic boat anchors. Not singling Mopar out, every body including exotic marques are doing just that....building plastik hefers.

Blame our government for that. Crush zones and safety equipment killed steel bumpers. Not the manufacturer.

Plastik headlights, plastik fender liners, plastik fasteners, molded **** headliners etc etc, & whatever metal there is its beer can crap....the mandates were a good excuse to chintz production costs. With all the plastik crap brought into play & **** keeps getting heavier....new Corvettes 3200 lbs.....it's bullshit & costs 10 times as much. JUNK!

You older guys are pricing the cars out of reach for us young guys. Ever since all these TV shops and auctions project prices are threw the freaking roof . There's a 73 charger on c.l. here for $6000 it needs full restoration ummm doing the math on that restore it for an additional $15K plus the $6K =$21000 for a car barely Worth $10-13K
Then restored cars are way up too another charger 74 se guy wants $21K and it's nothing fancy.
Plus add these super expense parts it almost doesn't make sense anymore. I can go buy a brand new challenger and not have any problems. Obama didn't help ether.
We can't get any younger guys interested in the older cars they like there "slammed" Honda's for some reason .
I don't know what's going to happen with the old cars in 20 years all I know I better save my money it might be a buying frenzy for me if your kids start selling hemi cars for peanuts!

I'm looking forward to this frenzy...it will be glorious

Honestly I have no idea where the hobby is going. I'm only 18, but have been working on my Charger since I was 16.

Last summer, when I was driving it (before I started the restoration), I was completely astonished at how many people were gawking at it, even though it's only a 73. Had some offers from some people to buy it, too. It was fun. Younger guys like these cars, but the prices for parts are through the f-cking roof. Reproduction parts are scarce, nos parts are hard to find, and priced are over-inflated. Most guys my age won't buy an older car, because of price alone.

You older guys should find and pick a young guy on this forum or around town and when your not able to drive anymore or your done with it give it away for free!!! Or atleast at an extremely discounted rate that way it gets taken care of and the hobby will live one leave it in your will only stipulation is it can't be sold only RE given to another younger guy!

I have somebody that offers to drive them all the time. He is my son-in-law. I advised he should practice a bit first and gain some experience, since he is a rabid chevy Guy!

I've been trying to sell my '79 Chrysler 300 for over a month now. Of all the nice comments, etc. etc. Not one person has shown any real interest in buying it.

I know, it's a smogged down '79, but the potential is there and many have said it's a good price. They all came with a 360 which was the biggest V-8 available that year. Performance camshaft from the factory.

No they weren't monsters but they could be built to be. The rest of the drivetrain is already there. 727 trans, sure grip rear and police grade suspension.

Weight: 3800

And I'll tell ya, literally 70% of the time I stop somewhere someone approaches me to talk about it. I even see heads turn while I'm driving.

But no buyers.

I wear my old Mopar hat all the time. Young people endlessly give me the thumbs up and ask what I drive. they are always interested. They would yell out " Mopars Rule" .I would laugh and wave.
Timothy, you have a message in your conversations...........................MO

Hell I made $1.65 an hr in my 1st "paid" job,
Paul Petterson Shell Georgetown Ca. 15-16 y/o
I was slave labor for my dad prior...

I worked my *** of to save $350 to by a 68 Charger R/T,
going rate was about $500 usually 1974-ish, for a decent used car,
{I had to work almost 600hrs to save it up,
every day & night after school, probably more because I had to gas up
my $150 65 Galaxie, or my motorcycle usually to get to work
}
I bought that car in Antioch Ca. down the street from my mothers house
{hot younger divorcee neighbor lady}

That would be like buying a classic project car for $6000
@ $10 an hr for 600 hrs, min. wage here in Calif. right now
Seem pretty comparable to me...

I certainly didn't have it very easy,
I didn't ever have a golden spoon up my ***...
My dad/mom instilled work ethics in me, work hard & get the knowledge to
do what it is you like...
I do see a bunch of youth that do the same thing today too, the good ones...
Get out of the basement & get off X-box etc., learn the **** I did...
Enough excuses already...
We didn't have it any easier at all...

Just a different era, different cars, they were just
"old used cars" back then too, Mopars they weren't even worth much,
compared to some Brand-X cars, unless it was a Hemi or 6bbl car,
just a devout following or select groups etc.

Right now is a new muscle car era, these performance cars today,
will flood the market in 10 years too, just a different era...

I don't see it/hobby dying anytime soon, old money out new money in,
some cars will always be worth more, or fads & styles change
especially if they were popular when new...
Maybe not to the 16-25 y/o crowd, changes all the time, always has too,
but as they get older, maybe it will become an interest to them...

I'm 57 y/o & I learned how to work hard to get what I wanted,
I didn't have a cellphone till I was in my 30's, we didn't have the internet either...
Talk about easy peasy ****...LOL

I loved cars, I loved older cars...
I'd do what ever I needed to, to get parts, tires, gas, insurance, knowledge etc.

We are in the information -www- internet era,
almost anything you want to learn or know or find,
can be found if you want to actually try...

Stay away from rust buckets if you're starting out too
they are just gosh damn money pits,...
Not for the novices either...
I'd highly suggest to buy something "as complete as you can",
Running & driving preferably...
Even if it cost more initially, you'll be $$$$ way ahead...
Or buy a project that someone bailed on 1/2 way thru,
if the parts are there, than all the hard **** is done,
just sweat equity left, for the most part, a few finishing touches,
drive it enjoy it, that do the paint etc. when you can afford it...
All the little stuff, trim bolts, bumpers, brackets, interior etc. etc. etc.
will cost more if you have to find & source them...
Work smarter not harder...

take it or leave it as far as my advice goes,
I don't really care, the reality or truth/facts hurts sometimes...

That's My $1.25 worth :soapbox:
