Hi from sweden, i have one -68 charger 383 that i bought from usa some years ago, tranny had 1000 miles on it when i bought it , it has always had a wining noice and 2 years ago something happened and it has been sitting since then because no time to fix it but now its time.

Reverse works and dont wine, the car wont move forward when shifter is in D position , if you put it down to gear 1 you can drive it but it is very noisy "sounds like a bird" and you can also manually go from first to second gear and it still works but very noisy.

So what do you guys think is the problem.

Some are saying this, the overrunning clutch (sprag) has failed. No way to fix it without removing the trans

Have you pulled the pan? The sprag clutch failure is a good guess since what you describe fits perfectly. Putting in drive won't work with a broken sprag clutch, but putting it manually in 1st gear engages the rear band as well so you can drive. This band isn't used to start off when in the drive position.

If there's been such a failure, chances are that there's a lot of trash in the pan and the whining noise that you're hearing is the pump cavitating as it struggles to suck through a clogged filter. That was my experience anyway.

Thanks i have not pulled the pan yet i will remove the tranny and rebuild it , it was rebuildt about 1500 miles ago and i think to stock spec , is there any kits that has the most parts i need , i dont wont manual valve body , and the sprag is there any sprags that is good that not is bolted?
I would like to build it for the future also 500-600hp.

The only upgrade sprag is the type available from Cope, A&A etc. The low dollar bolt ins offer no advantage. I'm not convinced its a sprag. May be a planet issue. Take it apart. What ever it is will be obvious.

It is too late for this rebuild, but is the kickdown hooked up and working?

Some words are difficult for me to understand and my writing is not always so good.

Yes it is hooked up and i think it is working properly, i have googled about it and I think it is hooked right, but if not it is the tranny is still damaged and can not be fixed with a kickdown that is not properly installed? What do you mean by too late for this rebuild?

If the fluid is full , making a whining noise and does move there is an internal problem. It is not the kick down linkage. Pull the pan and take a look.

I have not drained the pan yet, i come back with more information when i pulled the pan.

If the kickdown is not connected it might be a reason for a damaged transmission. It sounds as if something is broken inside and the transmission will need to be repaired or rebuilt. At the very least taken apart. My kickdown was not connected correctly and I lost a transmission also.

Pulled the pan today, thin metal in the pan.

Could be a few things but I suspect planetary teeth or case. That kind of goes along with your description in the first post. Is it magnetic?

Well doesn't look like brass, time for the trans to come out. What caused it is the major question!

Looks like low roller clutch (sprag) springs. Are they barely magnetic? If so that's them. Need a close up pic. But wait until it comes apart. Like I said earlier the problem will show itself.
Doug

dvw is right, the sprag springs are quite thin metal. They're accordion shaped before getting ruined.

You may as well continue with disassembly and pull the whole transmission out.

I will check with magnet later today , do i also need to buy a new valve body.

It isn't likely that your valve body has problems, you'll find out when you take a look inside. But the filter should have kept the inside protected.

Yep, that sucks. Gotta pull the transmission. The sprag is in the very back of the case so everything has to come off, which is good because you need to inspect everything.

Standard bolt in sprags are no different than the stock press in unit so no advantage......unless the case fits loose. Then it helps to keep it solid. A&A transmission sells an ultimate bolt in sprag which has a few more rollers over stock. This is an upgrade part.

Tranny is out, what is the next step to get it apart.
