my '63 Plymouth has an appointment Friday with the local DMV for vehicle inspection for an out of state transfer...the VIN tag is in the door jamb as usual...2 years in the making.

""where else would the VIN number be on these cars""...its an old racer out of indianna pulled out of a barn after 20+ years...just now got it running...all transfer paper work is done including insurance..1 last step at the DMV to get my plates and done!...they should only be verifying the numbers but there are exceptions to that rule everywhere...

The VIN on 1960 to 1967 Chrysler Corp cars appeared only on a plate attached to the driver's door post. It was never stamped on the body. Instead they stamped the SON (Shipping Order Number) on the car. The SON was preceded by the model year and assembly plant codes. The SON is stamped on the body tag which is attached to the driver's side inner front fender under the hood on A and B bodies.

The IBM card for the car will tie everything together as it will have the VIN and SON.

Quite correct. If the vin tag in the door jam is held on with rivets it is incorrect and may be a problem depending on the knowledge of the person inspecting it. On the other hand, if you get some bozo that has no clue about early Mopars he may have serious heart burn because there are no rivets. That seems to be what happens most often. They just don't understand that these cars had the vin tags spot welded in place and because of the alignment holes, they think rivets are supposed to be there.

Hope everything works out for you. Everyone knows Kalifornia is a bitch to get anything old registered.

thanks guys...tomorrow is the big day!just test drove it a few miles for the 1st time..after 2 years..it didn't blow up/burn to the ground/or kill me..and I don't think even any parts fell off..lol..still in race tune it wants to run..steering is a little loose..I think the adjuster on the box needs some attention..it has new 4.56 gears so I have to take it easy for the break in period...500 miles????its going to be tough not to spike the throttle for that long..

if they start looking for other numbers I will try and convince them that the door jam is it...and the vin tag IS spot welded on with the 2 empty alignment holes just as it was shipped in the drivers door..to be continued tomorrow,,12:00....

About 3 years ago, while we were still living in Cali, I bought the '63 from the seller
in Boise ID. When it came time to register it, I had the VIN inspected and certified
by a private, DMV approved, vendor who does that for a living. When it came time
to go to the DMV there was no problem what so ever. Except maybe the cost. I think
it was a little over $600 by the time I was done with everything. Good luck.

well..we got it done today..the lady at the dmv's husband who did my VIN inspection works on MG's..i knew right there all was going to be well...on time and on target I now have my plates...DONE!.the car rolled into my driveway from the hauler with wheelie bars but,,I thought that even the most leniat inspector would be eyeballin those closely!lol...so I took those off...

did not go very far..had a brake issue which is now fixed..1 last thing is the steering coupler has a little slop...before I put the break in miles on the new 4.56 gears...but its running good...thanks for all the input...I told her that the vin plate spot welded on the door jamb was it,,then she wanted hood up.. and after looking at the casting date on the crossram it was done...150.00 total transfer fee including plates..more pics later ..

This is one of the few times I am glad I live in New Jersey. $50 to make my old PA title an NJ title and $4.50 to transfer my regular street tags. There was the extra $11 for a new drivers license. Seems it didn't say Jr. when everything else did. The lady didn't even question the mileage, 22,417.
