Is there any connection between these 2 ? Should numbers be within a range of each other?

No, they have no bearing on each other in 1968. the vin is only on the dash. the SON is on the fender tag, and is supposed to match the numbers on the body.

The VIN is on the dash, and may be stamped (as a partial) on the engine and transmission. It all depends upon the assembly plant (Hamtramck or St. Louis), engine size and date of production. But unless you have the build sheet there is no way to tie the VIN to the VON.
