Years ago I bought some 3.91 gears for my 8 1/4 rear. While I now have an 8 3/4 in the car, to use the 8 1/4 in another car I have never been able to determine if the 3.91s would fit in my 2.71 carrier. See the excerpt below from Hemmings. I have seen it other places as well. They reference one carrier for smaller than 2.71 and one carrier for above 2.71 but what about exactly 2.71s?
"Two differential carriers were used in most of these axles. With the exception of the fuel-miser 2.24:1 ratio that we mentioned was used in 1980-'81, any other ratios smaller than 2.71:1 used one carrier and anything above 2.71:1 used a larger carrier."
