After being with Haggerty for three years, and with my policies coming up for renewal, I decided to check with my regular insurer to see what deal I could get with them. I didn't even bother before as I assumed they wouldn't cover a 70s car, but turns out I was wrong.

I contacted Direct General, and got a hold of a youngin on the phone. I gave her the VIN and the first thing she says is "your VIN is wrong. It doesn't have enough numbers." I had to explain to her that 13 numbers was the norm before 1981, and she told me she hadn't been born yet and I told her I kinda figured that. :) Their automated system doesn't accept anything older than 1981, but she was able to do a manual entry for me. Then she said she had to go get management approval to cover the car and put me on hold.

She came back on a minute or so later and told me they would cover my car with the same terms and conditions as my newer cars, but they would use the NADA value for the car, $24,000, for value purposes, which I told her was fine by me as I think the car is worth well less than that. :)

The bottom line came out to a $28 increase to my monthly premium, but I got a decrease because I didn't need to have some additional coverages that Haggerty required me to have, so between not having to pay the Haggerty expenses I'm paying about $20/month less and only having to be concerned with one company. :)

I've been contemplated getting Haggerty just because they specialize in classics and supposedly won't argue repair cost but have Geico right now. I've had my Charger insured by 2 companies and have had zero issues other than the little VIN ordeal you mentioned. My concern is if I ever need say a grill... and it cost $1,500 or a $500 front fender, etc??

I think it all depends on what car you have. If you have a high-end model, stick with Haggerty. I have a driver 74 Roadrunner, so I don't need 1968-1972 showcar-level insurance. :)

And parts costs don't worry me much. I can find 73-74 Roadrunner grills for $1,500, or $150. I just shop around.

I have Haggerty on my stuff. Regular companies either won't insure, or rake ya over the coals.

I don't have Haggerty, but do have another classic car insurance covering mine. I was told by my regular insurance company they would cover per NADA, but it was like the old "who's on first" when I asked what would happen in the event of an accident or total loss. The agreed value policy I have now, pays the agreed amount upon total loss and you walk away. I really got mine in the event of house fire or theft/fire while being restored.

I have Haggerty and will stay because its more than just a dollar. They actually take the hobby seriously. I know of cases where Haggerty has recovered stolen cars for their insureds. They go further in this respect than any other insurers will because this is what they do. Yes, some of it is about risk management, but some is about building a brand that they know that your car is more than just any car. Some are irreplaceable.

I use State Farm for my cars they have an agreed value for coverage and as long as you have authentic plates or historic the price is lower than Haggerty or Grundy. Also I can just have just comprehensive for the winter months when I don't drive it. That saves overall cost for the year by about 40%.

I used state farm for my roadrunner which was a lot cheaper but they are harder to deal with since they personally inspect the car & everything must be stock looking on the other hand I use haggerty for everything else which are very easy to deal with & will insure all most anything without any hassle plus they give you some extra coverage like the trailer paddock which is a nice extra if your still restoring the car but need to trailer it somewhere & something happens to it

When I had Stingrays I was insured through NCM (National Corvette Museum).
When I wised up and went Mopar, I asked them if they could insure my 'Cuda. ....and they said yes.....
Agreed replacement value of $30,000 for under $300 a year.....
I'm pretty happy with them!

You buy insurance for the peace of mind that when you need it you're not going to be put through the wringer settling a claim. Hagerty has worked well for me in that regard.

Never had an inspection but needed pictures sent to them. My 40 ford is hemi powered and my 63 dodge is a lettered race car and they had no issue insuring for either car. I had a chevelle that was in an accident and they paid for complete repair no issue. I suppose Haggerty and Grundy are easier to deal with because the majority are classics they insure. The thing I like about state farm is I can only have comprehensive on the car in the winter months when it's in storage and I can't with haggerty and grundy since they are 1 year policies.

Some do, but some don't, as I found out yesterday.

They want a fortune to cover my cars. They're afraid to have to pay for one. I get it, and thank God, there are specialty car insurance companies.

I have Jc Taylor haven't had to file any claims yet though.

I don't have a high end model, but I sure was surprised after I had an insurance appraisal done to find out that my 73 replacement cost was much higher than I anticipated. Granted I am darn close to show car level, but you might want to make sure you have adequate coverage even though you have a driver level car.

I'm just so so with Hagerty. Not impressed with the "$40 dollar Hagerty Fee". They did cover me with no questions asked when my car burned at a storage facility. However, I hear they are trying to sue the storage facility owner for negligence to cover the cost of their claims. That's disappointing as I have known him for a long time and he was very careful about the facility. He did a walk through inspection every day and initialed a calendar each time with a time stamp. He didn't permit anyone in there without him and he never got into or moved anyone's vehicles. He took it very personal when the place burnt. Have another buddy here who got hit directly on the driver side rear quarter/wheel last summer in his 70 challenger. First week on the road after a 2 year resto. Drove in the quarter and locked up the rear end. Hagerty is claiming that the hit on the wheel wasn't responsible for damage to the rear end. Car was in limbo for 6 months as they fought him until they agreed to send a specialist to look at it. New rear and in the car now. If I had other options here I would probably leave Hagerty.

I have a "Stated Value" policy with State Farm. Only restriction is mileage which they never check. $20 / month.

Are you sure you're comparing apples to apples? Agreed value? Deductibles on comp and collision?

years ago when i first insured my rr with state farm i only did photos but when i spoke with them about insuring my other cars they told me they had to physically come out & take photos which when they did the agent said they wouldn't touch my other cars since there not factory stock which they are plus lettered up . They wouldnt even do my ramp truck cause it was lettered & to much of a liability.
