The 71 is very close to have paint.Would you be pissed or am I nuts.Hears the story took the car to the body shop 3 mouths ago.One mouth into it they call and say i would feel better removing front and rear glass,i say ok.Just yesterday the shop who took out the glass gave me a price to reinstall the glass + a new front windshield WTF, O he says that shattered and you need all new clips,no way i said the clips are like new I know i seen them first hand,so I ordered new got them today. The thing that gets me and we called the owner of the body shop why after 2 mouths we just find out now,all he can say is he sorry.Something does not add up,is the glass shop trying to sell me my owned glass,or did it break. The body shop contracted the glass shop not me and there was no talk about breaking glass, bonded glass is far easier to remove than gasket right. What would you do.PS this shop has done 3 cars for us, with no problems.

Good business says he should eat the parts.....
you should not be on the hook....
BUT in the end you could mediate a settlement and split the cost...

I would be pissed be broke my windshield and is charging me for a new one. It is easy to cut the gasket and remove the windshield because the gasket gets replaced anyway.

Ask to see it, you can tell if it was broken on removal or they broke it after it was removed and stored. Either way they should know to cut the seal to remove the glass without damaging it. So you would be responsible for the seal only, I wouldn't want an old seal to be reused, that is asking for a leak. More shady business practices in my opinion.

Why do you have to pay for a windshield they broke ?!?!?

Had a windshield place come and take mine out of my '69. Its hard to imagine them breaking it the way they removed it.

Also, if they are reputable they will keep any old parts, nuts, bolts & etc...in a box or 2...

                  So here's the thing ...
                  1) if I'm the bodyshop and the windshield guy breaks it taking it out, I confront him and tell him he's on the hook. Why didn't that happen?
                  2) windshield guy takes it out and stores it till reinstall time and it breaks while he has it. Why doesn't the bodyshop tell him he's on the hook for it?
3)windshield guy takes it out and leaves it with the shop and it gets broken there?

How are any of these scenarios your problem?

If it is glued in then its like Stanton said, broken on removal or storage both not your fault. Tell them you will pay for the install but not for the replacement which wasn't your fault. Good luck!

                      whoa...
i don't think i know anyone that will guarantee taking out a used windshield?
and that goes for any glass shop
call them and ask and see for yourself what they will say..lol
                      as chit can happen..
the break down of communications is what would of bugged me.
since they have done work for you in the past that you liked
i would just mention the communication issue that bugged me and
                      for the next time
                      do it yourself,
if it is so easy to do without breaking..

I would not mess with them too much, try to maintain the goodwill you have at the moment. We all have economic "setbacks" like this during our restorations. That is just part of the "fun".

I know you will pay a little more by not confronting them, but it might be worth it when forecasting future business with the shop. If you don't drop by the shop everyday, these things are sure to happen. If they do good work, count your blessings.

I suppose you're right about "no guaranty" but it just seems awfully strange that they would take so long to "remember" it was broken.

They didn't "just remember". They just broke it. Any glass shop would have told you right away. You're getting screwed and there's likely nothing you can do about it.

No glass company around here will take responablity when removing a used windshield.
