About ten minutes ago my Doberman (on leash as always) and I were out for our evening walk. We were attacked by two dogs in El Centenario on Calle Cuarta between Palo Fierro and Cardon (We live in Mexico near La Paz the finish line of the Baja 1000). This is about the fourth time now in the last year or two. Thankfully, I now carry a baseball bat with which I was able to hit the dog that grabbed my dog. Broke the bat in the process but it allowed us to get away without any apparent injuries. The attacking dogs ran from behind some vehicle very rapidly and really took us both by surprise.

Glad you two did not get hurt.
I'm a dog lover but can not put up with a mean dog.
If a dog is guarding it's home or human that is one thing.
If they are just a mean *** dog that wants to take after anyone anyplace they need more than a ball bat.
Jmho.

What are your laws pertaining to the amount of force required to protect your property ?

Glad you came thru
unscathed.

I hit an an attacking dog with an Nulla Nulla an Aboriginal hardwood hunting club i can say the dog had a wobbly trip home

After the scuffle the dogs disappeared in a hurry, so I guess I didn't hurt 'em too much. I just hope I taught 'em a lesson.

Hurtin'em would have been
my primary goal. They now
roam free to harm someone
else. So much the wiser for
those armed with a bat.
Dogs ain't stupid. Call your
LEO's and report this. I was
attacked once.

Glad you're ok. My father in law many years ago was taking his dog for a walk and they were attacked. I think they were pit bulls, either way he had to get a shovel to break off the attack.

As a jogger for 43 years I’ve had my share of loose dog experiences. The damn, happy ankle biters I think are the worse. A lady unloading groceries in her garage let her little ball of fury out who attacked as I jogged by. I shoo’d him off a couple of times but he was getting so close I thought he was really going to latch on to my ankle. So I stopped, turned, faced him, bent down and shook a finger in his face. And then shouted, look here you little ****, if you don’t get out of here I’m going rip your damn head off and kick it down the street. The dog retreated. The lady just stood in the garage glaring at me. And the next door neighbor working in the yard was laughing his *** off.

Another time I was heading for a sidewalk that runs between 2 houses and across a little foot bridge over a small lake spillway behind the houses. The house to my left has a couple Great Danes who usually woof at me as I jog by. One morning as I approached the sidewalk the 2
Great Danes appeared out of the back yard after the gate wasn’t secured. They took up a stance as I approached and they got more menacing as I approached. I realized they weren’t going to let me slip around and get to the sidewalk so I stopped and stood there contemplating what next. The big, black one however started slowly approaching me, growling with bared teeth until it was just 2 feet or less away. I finally resolved I wasn’t getting to the foot bridge today so now what? About that time he took another small step closer and instinctively I swung and hit him with what was really a hard slap. It caught his lower jaw and slammed it into his upper jaw with a noticeable clunk which really caught him by surprise and he stepped back sort of stunned. I decided they were just guarding their home so I turned and jogged off the way I came. They still woof at me occasionally when I jog by.

If not allowed to carry a gun......
Consider the heaviest oak "walking stick" you can find.
(And I would have gone out of my way to do as much injury to a loose attacking dog as I could. )
The last one I ran across, I shot and killed.

Edit: As I am a dog lover, and owner, I feel this post might require a little more info.
The story, minus the gory details: I was alerted while lying in bed by a disturbance. Ran out front, found my 75yo next door neighbor on the ground,, knocked down and being attacked by my across-the-street neighbors two pit bull mixes. The owner was ineffectually trying to call them back and pull them off him. I ran back in my house, fetched my 38, and shot one dead. The other decided to leave. My friend, the 75 yo was hospitalized, but not seriously injured. Animal CONTROL THANKED ME, and said I probably saved his life.

Try one of these. I wonder if you could use some bear spray? Not sure about your laws there. I carry one of these on my next to my handgun on my belt when we hike.
2024 New Automatic Retractable Hiking Stick – KatanaAll

There are some great hiking stick/defense all-in one's available out there. They keep you out of trouble with those that might think you are armed with a baseball bat. I have a self-made one, but I am thinking about upgrading since there have been a lot of cougar sightings on the trails around here recently.

Back in about 85, my dad used to walk about 3 miles a few times a week. He used to take our old pit with him, until he got too old. One day I was over and had my pit with me and dad told me there was a house where the guy would let his Doberman just run loose. He said the dog would rush him and the guy thought it was funny. He asked if he could take Butch with him for protection. I said, I’ll go with you and we went. As we were coming to the house, we didn’t see anything, after we passed the house, we heard something. I didn’t have Butch on a leash (never needed one). That Dobie, hit Butch from behind. Butch spun, grabbed him by the neck and slammed him into the pavement, in a second. The guy comes running towards us, I called Butch off, which he did, the Dobie ran back to the house and I took off after the guy. My dad called me off, and I stopped. The guy was of course all peed off, yelling about what happened. My dad kept me at bay, and told him, next time, we aren’t calling Butch off. Never did my dad have a problem with that dog again. Butch was about 80 lbs., solid white and built like a tank. My dad was amazed he stopped when I told him to and complemented my training of him.

After being attacked in a similar fashion last year and before I could locate the baseball bat, I carried a pitch fork for a couple of days. Since then I have carried the bat.

This morning since the bat was busted, I looked around the house for a quick alternative so I could maintain our scheduled morning and evening walks without interruption I found an aluminum broom handle that had broken last week. The threaded end that goes into the bristles was cheap plastic and snapped off. That's the second aluminum broom handle that has busted that way now.

I did notice this morning the two dogs that normally bark at us behind a fenced yard without fail did not bark at us as is their custom. I saw one laying down under a vehicle in the fenced yard and I saw no sign of the second one. The attack was more or less across the street from this same house. Can't be sure though if it were the same dogs because in the past I never saw them up close having been always behind the fence barking and me always keeping my distance by walking on the opposite side of the street.
