I am doing a late model hemi swap in my 73 satellite. It has power steering and was a factory ps car. The biscuit style rubber steering joint was too bulky so I want to replace it with a universal joint. I have a borgeson Mopar replacement Steering joint. However after I take the intermediate shaft that holds the rubber biscuit joint (the box with the joint in it and the rubber biscuit) the shaft is about 3.5 inches too short.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or should I just get a coupler and some steering shaft stock and weld on an extension?

I modify mine as needed by welding or shortening. It's a pretty straight forward mod, not that big of a deal. good luck

Maybe a dumb question..... Does that steering shaft telescope & is collapsed like the older ones can do when you break the internal plastic shear pins?

Not a dumb question because while searching for an answer I asked myself the same question! I detached the old biscuit joint and pulled the steering shaft myself and it was working fine. The problem comes when you take that small intermediate shaft that houses the little box with a small universal joint in it because the 3/4" steer shaft stops there... I just have not seen this problem yet on any of the threads but I have also figured that being a 73 model year these are just enough different from the earlier models to be a pain! Lol

I should have called him, but I had already ordered the steering stock and coupler. So here is what I did...

Pushed the steel pin for the old intermediate shaft joint out of the steering shaft

Cut a 79mm piece of 3/4" smooth steering shaft to fill the gap left

Drilled the coupler for a bolt to couple the steering column to the new shaft through the original steel pin shaft.

Mocked it all up, now it's ready to be welded. (I will finish weld it once my full swap is done)

Speaking of steering shaft being too short.....I need a pointer in the right direction. I want to put the factory power steering back in my butchered car badly. Where did you get that steering u-joint from? I can't find it anywhere; Rock Auto, Advance, Napa...etc. I will attach a picture of the home made setup I have with a spacer that looks like it was from a Flexlite style cooling fan. I have 2 power steering pumps and a rebuilt factory box. Question 2 is can I swap the box without pulling the motor out? I'd like to do it without having to weld or cut anything. I wonder about clearance on the headers also. Any tip would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I had the luxury of my engine being out for the swap. I f you have enough clearance to the front you probably can remove it with pulling the engine, but your gotta remove your pitman arm and bolts from the back side. As far as the adapter I made, I had to cut and weld it. But it sounds like others know Bergman has them already made.

I got the u-joint from summit it's part number BRG-012164.

That setup looks like your death, not too far off.

You ain't kiddin! I am not comfortable with it at all so I take it pretty easy. I have no idea where they got the parts from to do it. I met a guy who raced a 1963 Dart with a Hemi in it and part of his home made front end had universal joints from a socket set welded in. He ran in "C" Gas if I remember right. The car was called "Little Iron" I believe and I never saw him lose a race. Car was fast as hell !!!
At any rate, I must do something with my set up and changing to a Borgeson unit is what I would like, I just can't afford it. I think the box can be changed without pulling the motor. May have to jack up engine a little or loosen headers and or k-frame. I know I have seen it somewhere here before. I would like to see a picture of a stock power steering setup for my 73 Satty-RR clone. My FSM only shows the steering column in an exploded view. If anyone has a shot of one it would really help me out although I should have started my own thread as I don't want to hijack this one. Thanks to those who responded though!

When I go out to the shop later today I will see if I can find the original pieces and try to mock them back up for you...

Thank You, that would be greatly appreciated! By the way, "Happy Independence Day!" This is the first time in 14 years that I was off on this holiday!

I hope you had a good 4th! I worked it here but my security detail was for fireworks so it was still enjoyable!!

When I got to my friends shop he had already cleaned up and threw out the old shaft. I know Buchillion has the direct factory replacements, as well as the suggestions of others here... If you are interested, if you bought the coupler and u joint, I have extra steering shaft and can send you a small section. I had to buy a 3ft piece! Lol

Thank you for the attempt. No, I didn't buy anything yet. I appreciate your offer also. I will keep it in mind. What is in my car is solid, I just don't trust it. No rush, I have been wanting to do this for 5 years now. I will check Buchillion.
By the way, are you really a rescue diver? If you are, my hat's off to you. I got certified in 1974, haven't done it in years, but still have my gear. That reminds me. I must send my tanks out for a visual & hydro.Working under water in zero visibility would scare me to death. They'd have to send someone down to get me out as well as any victim I was looking for, Lol.

Ha ha ha... Yes I am... It is a bit awkward at times... The complete darkness plays tricks on your eyes! Lol... Also when you touch something and it moves!

These days even light plays tricks on my eyes..... and my brain!
