Just watched a 2011 rerun of How It's Made, they showed the make over of a vintage steering wheel. Took an original wheel, stripped it down and built up a 2 piece plywood core and covered it with wood veneer. Used a vacuum bag to suck the veneer down. Used leather on the wheel spokes. Wish I had the episode recorded. Neat stuff....
