I have added a tachometer to the gauge cluster on my 68 Road Runner. It has a provision for a back light but the hole is completely round instead of having "notches" like the other gauges have. Anyone have any info on what I need to add this light?

I did the same for my 69 Road Runner. Classic Industries has a tach harness that includes the proper light socket for this. #MB1823. $40. I does not include the bulb however. I can't remember the number of the bulb I used, but same as dome light IIRC. Good luck!

Mr Roadrunner is correct on the light socket, but I don't think the bulb for it is the same as the dome light. That bulb # should be listed in your service manual. I'm thinking it is a much smaller bulb and the socket should have a orange wire on it with a connector that will plug into a location with other orange wires in the dash harness. The socket just snaps into the round hole on the cluster. When I added a tachometer to my 67 Coronet R/T where the clock blank was I relocated the light hole and made it the exact size of the backlight hole in the clock blank.

Thanks for the help guys. I bought the tach and a wiring harness for it at the same time, but it did not come with a light socket, only the power wire and the lead for the tach signal. I will have to pull some receipts to figure out where I bought it from and check into the missing plug.

light socket must be included on underdash harness, since you can get a delete plate or clock and STILL the car will light up that area. so must be on car harness.

Recalling from memory, on my 68 Road Runner with factory tach the lamp plugs into a three terminal accessory socket that is built into the harness. The lamp socket is rubber and just pushes into the hole in the tach housing. The lamp wire has a male barrel termination that plugs into the accessory socket in the harness.
You will probably have this resolved soon, but I can take pictures this weekend if it will help.

Oh! just found the delete plate doen't get light provision!!! weeeeeeird!!!!

The instrument panel diagram shows an extra wire sourced from the lighting source as mentioned... so I was wrong on the fixed provisions on dash harness like on my car which even with a delete plate got a light.
