Looks like I'll be doing it myself this time as the dealer price went up from $59 to $96.

There are only two "approved" brands besides Mopar brand (Shell Helix and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Euro- my bet is that Mopar brand is one of those), and one of those is not available in the US!

The list price for the Pennzoil is between $11.50 and $13 a quart.

...but Pep Boys has it on sale for $8.50.

$59 was a deal!

If you don't believe the "Ferrari spec" part-

OK, OK, it's technically "Fiat spec" but it's Fiat spec for Ferrari!

Motor oil is the cheapest insurance there is. Don’t try to save money there. My do it yourself oil changes are about $90 with 7 Quarts of Amsoil and a Wix filter. Best 90 ever spent. I can remove the inspection cover and wash and detail it, and do a good visual too. And the plug won’t get messed up. I’m using Fumoto valves, clean and easy.

Well, since it's a small displacement (1.4L) turbocharged engine with a 6 speed manual, and only one oil available in the US meets the manufacturers specifications, I don't really see how I have much choice.

It's turning 60,000 and I'd like to keep it (and it's 34 average MPG, while being as quick as my 360 Duster) for a while.

I run this in my 2017 Renegade 1.4 Turbo 6 speed manual

Yes it’s FCA approved - Full synthetics

You can use ANY brand you like as long as it meets the maker's specs.
As for specs, the dexos specs are a money grab.
GM created a spec and then told the oil companies your oil must meet our spec or we won't approve it for use.
Thing is, those oils already were approved. GM added a spec which wasn't tested before. The oil companies didn't change a thing except to retest for that spec. The oil is the same.
But now they had to retest the oil and then pay to be dexos approved.
Its like a Craftsman hammer. They sell you the same hammer as they sell the govt. But the govt hammer must have the mil spec number on it and the paperwork. Guess which one costs more?

@Bee1971

Thanks.

I like Valvoline.

I run the "high mileage" syn blend in everything else I own.

How do you like that Renegade?

I really like mine.

I wish the seats (including the pass front) folded flat like the PT it replaced.
I wish it had a better cup holder arrangement.
(instead of the "cute" angled capped bottle only door holders)
I wish the door armrests were actually usable/comfortable.

That's it though.

High mileage oil...has "seal swell" in it to stop leaks and soften valve seals.

Semi syn oil...how much of the base stock is synthetic?
Truth be known, multi viscosity oils are semi syn. Polymers are what makes the oil act thicker at higher temps.

IIRC it's the only syn blend they offer.

Wife's hyundai is at 155,000

Dakota is at 168,000

Satellite is at 61,000

God knows how many are on the 1969 440 in the step side

Those are the only 3 that get driven. I think they all qualify.

There ya Go!
the KEY ingredient is a GOOD Filter!

Saw some Kirkland oil today, for the first time, 5w-30 the only weight. Dexos certified, full synthetic (it says, who knows?) $25 for two 5-quart jugs. Anybody know whose oil this is? It sure ain't made by costco!

good to go!

If they say use xyz, then use xyz. It doesn't say you have to use one brand over another, as long as it has xyz. Fear drives most to read to much between the lines. All oil brands want all the business they can get by accommodating car manufactures wants or needs. This is one subject that you can get your *** kicked for telling the truth.

As pointed out by Bee1971 the spec is Fiat Chrysler MS12991...

...which I have not seen on any bottle of oil I've ever looked at.

Interestingly, I stopped by Advance on my way home and they had Valvoline part # 966, but most of the bottles had different labeling (without the "MST") and did not carry the Fiat Chrysler MS12991 spec, olny porsche, audi, bmw, mercedes specs. Even the 2 bottles that did have the presumably newer MST labeling did not show the Fiat Chrysler MS12991 spec, and actually showed no specs in a font I could read. I'll be looking that up on line.

It was on sale for "buy one, get one 50% off", making it about $7.50.
They had no 4 or 5 quart jugs.

They had the Pennzoil ultra premium euro, but it was $10 per quart (again, no 4 or 5 gal jugs) and I decided to check another store and bring my 3x reading glasses, or check the Valvoline website.

I'm not a huge fan of Pennzoil, after all the parafin stories a few decades ago.

I've been using Valvoline since I stopped being able to find Kendall back in the 90's.
I had a brief stint with Castrol, but found it didn't hold up well in my 1970 383.

The MS 12991 spec is the same as the dexos/dexos 2 spec.
These specs are made up by the auto companies to make money. If you don't pay the money you can't list your oil as being approved...but you can list on your MSD sheets that your oil meets or exceeds that spec.

Update-

Apparently Valvoline has changed the name of the product in question from "Synpower" to "Advanced Full Synthetic", so what I thought was older packaging was apparently newer packaging.

...and it looks like they are no longer offering 5w-40.
Even though I saw it in the store, it's not listed on the site!

Further, it lists FCA MS-11106 spec but not MS-12991.

Bummer.

Apparently there is a fair amount of discussion on renegade, 124, and oil specific forums about this.

Here is the list of oil that actually is documented to meet that spec-

Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40
Ravenol 5W-40 VST
Valvoline 5W-40 MST SynPower
Shell Ultra Helix 5W-40
Total Quartz 9000 5W-40
Redline Full Synthetic 5W-40

Anyone ever heard of "Ravenol"?

"Total Quartz"?

Shell Helix is as mentioned not available in the US, but is said to be identical to the Pennzoil product.

As I've stated above, Valvoline has rebranded/reformulated and appears to no longer meet the spec.

Something tells me Redline is going to be pricey.

Looks like I'm back to Pennzoil.
