I remember that a 1971 Superbird was actually designed and produced. The wind tunnel test is on line. I think it was Richard Petty racing. I know the 426 was no longer being used because it was TOO fast and Chevy cried to have it outlawed from Nascar. The 71 had a 305 v8 in it. Can anyone tell me what that was?

No 1971 Superbirds or Daytonas were ever produced by Chrysler. They did do wind tunnel testing on 3/8 scale models, and did a report on the results of the testing. The program was scrapped when Nascar rule changes made any aero cars impractical to race.

So why is a 71 wind tunnel test done on a real life car? If you are correct, then why was the engine 305 decal on the hood of the wind tunnel test car? why would any decal be on a test 3/8 scale? No need for a decal on a test car? Something does not sound right?

Maybe you're thinking of this one?

Just looked at the wind tunnel test. That is not a 3/8 scale model. Also You may be right the Chrysler may not have made one but Richard Petty racing may have. Right?

My friends Gary and Pam Beineke have a 71 Superbird Petty car,but they built it,not Petty or Chrysler.

No disrespect to anyone, i am just an old guy that has seen or read so much about MOPAR that i ask questions. So please any member, i never intend to put you down. But questions I do have.

It is probably my friends car that you saw. They had the car wind tunnel tested in North Carolina,by the same engineers that tested the original 3/8 scale models back in 1970/1971.

Gary and Pam's car is also decades newer.

...and chargervert knows his **** where recent one-off tributes are concerned.

They are currently selling the street car versions of the 71 Superbird, and Daytona that they built. Checkout their website,71 wingcars.com

I was involved with Gary and Pams wingcar project. Gary painted my Charger convertible, and it was the inspiration for them to build something outside the normal Mopar restoration "box".

I just watched the video. At the end it says, concept by Gary and Pam Beineke.
I agree, Chrysler never built a full size 71 Superbird

I have found that members of this site are pretty THICK skinned. Usually
Knowledge is king, so pass it around when you can.

They race the cars in land speed racing, and have since built super charged Hemi powered 71 Daytona funnycar, and have a jet powered funny car in the works.
