So I stumbled on another I’m just going to go look and ended up taking it home. The car is solid as can buy there are a few issues.

first off there’s a lot of things missing or cobbled together. For one there’s a lug but capping off a carb port (no joke) and there was no air cleaner but I towed it home so it hasn’t seen much run time without the air cleaner. I will say this things is smooooooth but I’d like to get it road worthy so what do you see here that needs attention or is missing ?

This is how the car was running and this is what I found after removing the air cleaner
I’ll post some pics of the whole car in a bit

I had one in my 72 F100 3/4Ton 4x4.
Good solid motors with plenty of power even with the Autolite 2bbl.
I really liked it because unlike all the small block mopars I have owned over the years, the distributor is in the front and easy to get to. They like most motors respond well to headers and intake / carb / cam upgrade.
I mean it says "OK" on the passenger valve cover, what more could you want

Depending on what year that vehicle is it is either a 351 Cleveland ( up to incl 74) or a 351 Modified (used from 75 and up) it could also be a 400 Modified, it would designate on the drivers valve cover decal. If legible.

I remember one difference was the fuel pump mounting bolts were either over / under or side by side between the windsor and cleveland and can't recall which was which

That’s not a 351w
Not even close. How bout the size and shape of the heads and valve covers, Ray Charles could see that.

Size of ports on the intake and exhaust manifolds. Look at the oil cap mounting area.

That engine looks very clean and original, like it was stored a long time, looks like mice were living in the outer rim on the air cleaner.

Cleveland should be drivers side lower if I remember correctly.. had 1 in my old 71 Mach 1. Also if I recall the 351 Windsor is in the 302 family the Cleveland is not.. if it’s a Cleveland make sure it’s original bore. Many oversized and got dangerously close to the thin wall side. If that happens with a Cleveland, say goodbye!

here’s a pic of a Cleveland..

Here’s a good link explaining the differences between the 3. -351’s

Dan Juhasz is dead on, it could be any of the three he mentioned, depending on year. One thing it isn't.....a 351 windsor.

That’s odd because I had a few ford people look at it and they all said it was a 351 Windsor

hmm what should I look for to check ?

Yeah I was suprised runs real smooth even the way it is just want to connect all the small things that are disconnected

Valve cover size and shape, number of valve cover holddown bolts. Windsor uses sixbolts, and the ends of the cover tapers, wider at the header flange than at the intake side. Cleveland uses eight bolts (429/460 uses seven)
Edit. I had a buddy with a 557" 385 series (429/460) that told all the chevy guys it was a 351 cleveland.

Valve cover bolts are the easiest to tell...

Three Easy Visual Differences Between the 351W and 351C/351M.
  • Radiator Hose.
On a Cleveland/Modified engine, the radiator hose (and thermostat housing) sticks vertically right out of the top of the engine block. Windsor engines have the radiator hose and thermostat installed into the intake manifold, where it exits from the front of the engine.
  • Valve Covers.
Windsor valve covers use 6-bolt covers, whereas the Cleveland/Modified uses 8-bolt covers.
  • Timing Chain.
Cleveland/Modified engines have the timing chain recessed into the front of the block itself, and its timing cover is essentially just a flat piece of metal. The Windsor’s timing chain attaches to the front of the engine and has an external timing cover typically made of cast aluminum.
Three Easy Visual Differences Between the 351C and 351M
  • Cleveland engines share a bellhousing bolt pattern with the Windsor family. 351M engines use the bellhousing bolt pattern of the 385-series Ford big blocks.
  • Due to a higher deck, the 351M’s intake manifold is wider than a 351C.
  • Motor Mounts.351 Cleveland mounts use two bolts to attach to the engine, whereas the Modified uses three

Looks like a 351M due to the rocker cover design.. correct me if I’m wrong...

Looks like a 351 boat anchor to me

I had a 72 Ford Torino 20 years ago or so. Had a 351 Cleveland, 2 bbl. Crankshaft snapped right behind the harmonic balancer inside the block when I was headed down the highway.

Cleveland are up and down Windsor engines are side by side

No need for me to post, lotta Ford guys have already got it covered....

351 Windsor valve covers should look similar to regular 302 covers. It's just a raised deck version of the 302.

Not a ford guy (do still have a 54 vicky with a badass 239 y-block, lol ) but i do have a couple good buddies, that bleed ford blue.

I've got a Ford & I worked for Ford... But mostly I spent my money on Mopars.... Just poking fun... I like all American Iron... And ever some foreign stuff....
