So, I'm watching the Mecum auction. Up comes a superb B5 blue, white top 1970 Cuda "Convertible". Turns out, it's a V-code 6-barrel car, that was restored but installed a Hemi instead ! Now, I don't know the exact production number for a 70 Cuda CONVERTIBLE 6-barrel, but I think it would be somewhat low ? The car only sold for $120k. Did that substitution hurt the value ? Even the commentators mentioned that substitution is usually on 318 or 383 cars. What say you ?

I don't think so. You could put a 6 pack in it and sell the hemi and make money.

I believe so. Depends on the guy having a beer and waving his paddle though I suppose.

MO yes V code Cuda's convertibles are rare, 99. The downer to me on that car color combo.

I guess when you have a 6 pack car, the only "step up" is a Hemi. For those that have to have the biggest and the baddest!! Not for the purists. I vote that it decreased the value, but in a good way!! haha

The 440/6 was already the biggest, he went smaller to get the baddest. :)

A well done hemi cuda convertible clone based on a G code would bring that. That car either has some skeletons in its closet or the potential bidders were focusing on other cars there.

As a point of reference, a friend of mine sold a 70 6-bbl Cuda "hardtop" a few years ago for $115

As the car wasn't matching numbers, he didn't devalue anything. If there were other skeletons about that car he has done nothing but help it.

Like the saying goes.
(They are only original once )
After the numbers engine was gone its open season.
What hemi ?
That would make a differance i would think.

There was a V-Code '70 Challenger convertible that sold not long after for around the same money. Looking at the prices from today there were records broken (Daytona) and some not bad deals to be had.

Then, a date-correct 440 block would make no difference ? I think it was a 426 popped in it.

Disclaimer;
So no one gets upset & thinks this is directed at them
No offense to anyone here, not critiquing anyone here either
my comments are just my honest opinion, & it was asked...

Resto-Mods are now bringing as much if not more
than many OE restorations
(not that that car is a resto-mod, but that's the closest comparison example)
especially non #'s matching stuff,
that alone sometimes is a 25% hit to the value
(maybe to the more persnickety collectors)
otherwise being that car was a good quality resto
(as far as I could tell on TV)
or resto-mod, non-numbers matching example, with an engine upgrade etc.

IMO not many people I know, think a good period looking/correct dated/coded
426 Hemi is a value loser, in a car that could have had on put in it originally,
with all the proper parts 'that should accompany it'

If it's the one I'm thinking it was
(no photo, so I'm assuming it's the same car)
it was a really nice job, from what I could see
in a 2 min.s it was on the block

IMO no harm no foul
(it may have brought a few more thousand (?) but, not that much more)
original 440-6bbl is long gone it will never be what it was

Seems some think even 'a replacement or date coded engine' is a downgrade
they then treat it no differently than (to get it cheaper, rightfully so)
But;
as if it was a slant 6 or a 318 car with a 440-6bbl or a 426 Hemi
whatever swap
it's still the same deal, a non #'s matching
in just a higher-priced 'starter car' if it was an Org. V code car

as long as it's not be misrepresented as something else it's not
the car in question wasn't as far as I know
(IIRC EB5 (?) blue & white car (?)

--------------------------------------------------------------------

they are only original once, even an org. & restored car
unless it's an unmolested low mileage/survivor etc.,
it's been altered in some fashion or another

--------------------------------------------------------------------

IMO
That Beautiful Green on Green Daytona Hemi 4 speed Dana 60 track pack car
& 'supposedly' the highest optioned out known Hemi car
that sold for record $$$, at $1.2 million + fees & reg. etc.
(I kind of wondered if David Spade bought that one too ?)
anyway that car
'is in a completely different class'
of sales & value to a collector
not taking anything away from the E-body 440-6bbl vert.,
(1 of 99 ? if that's correct) now with a 426 Hemi
that Daytona is just in a different class

---------------------------------------------------------------------

a lot of these cars were, rode extremely hard & put away wet
day in day out, or raced from day 2
many got blown up & people replaced the engines,
some 'upgraded', or replacement parts,
a fender or quarter, bumpers, blocks, heads, rear end/trans etc.
some are the 'same deal', but just non-date coded or non #'s matching

long before they/we had
anywhere near the values, we are seeing today

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Someone on FBBO was saying yesterday maybe the day before
Thye stated & started in another thread
'the prices were/are coming down' people were moving on etc.
IMO that's wishful thinking
I don't think so, not quality builds, not rare cars
maybe the spaghetti strainers/hulls, or the basket cases
some people are trying to get (gouge) restored money for NOW
the OP assumed their value/prices, may be taking a hit (?)

I kind of doubt that too...

It's strong as it ever was...
good & bad

my $1.25

I fell asleep reading it ^^^^, but thanks for your insight. I'm just curious what the "thinking" is out there.

Then, it seems the Mopars aren't bringing good $$$ ? As compared to the Brand X stuff ? I didn't see it ,but a 71 GTO got 400k ? WUT ???
