As of Thursday afternoon I became the new owner of a 1966 Coronet 500. I like the car but I'm a Ford and Audi fan. So why did I buy this car?

For the past 32 years it belonged to a friend I've known since the early 80's. A man who over the past 10 years may as well have been my brother. I used to joke that he would die before selling it. Jan 4th my joke turned into reality. I found him that evening no longer with us. His family knew that he and I spent many hours working on the Coronet over the years so when I made it clear I wanted it they made it happen. Can't ask for more than that.

The car is rough but mechanically top notch. Runs 12.60' in street trim/tires on a mildish 71 440. A lot of the things we talked about doing to improve it I hope make happen before I see him again. So here I am on a mopar forum.

Welcome from the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I'm sure your friend is looking down, and is happy the car is in your hands.

Welcome to the dark side, for all of the right reasons! That car is where it belongs.

You'll find that the lion's share of this board are great people.

When I first read the thread title I thought it was kinda odd... But after reading the reason for it, yeah, I wouldn't want a car at that cost either.... Sorry to hear of your friends passing... I'm sure he would want to to have it....

TY for the sentiments but no way, no how will I ever forget my Fords and Audis. There's a long list of reasons I'm firmly in those two camps. ;)

The Coronet has exactly one reason I wanted it. Last spring when I suspected my friend may not have much longer I went on a crusade to make it run and drive up to it's potential. The payoff was one surreal Thursday evening at Kil-Kare in Xenia Ohio. 6 total vehicles at the track. Joe hot lapped it that night. Run after run with the only break between passes was a quick visual under the hood while grabbed a drink of cold water. The car ran 14 passes that night, every one between 12.72 and 12.68, then drove the 22 miles home. Never turned the key off until it was back in the driveway. Joe wasn't talkative guy but he didnt shut up for a week. For a month all our conversations revolved around what needed to be changed to get it under 12.5.

I miss my friend.....
