Hey found a 489 3rd member with a 5.37 gear and cone style suregrip for sale locally.

How ridiculous would it be to put it in my 72 Charger with a 318? I know it would be horrible for highway driving, but might be fun around town?

In '74 I ran 5.13 in my 340 4 speed Duster that was my daily driver.. Being 17 at the time it was Fun Fun Fun.
Gas was only 32 cents a gallon before the gas crunch. Of course my hourly wage was $1.00
Thanks for the memories !

Didn't A100s have some low gear like that for town deliveries? I remember seeing 13" wheels on some so easier to access bed with ease.

Ridiculous. Your 318 will be in pieces before the weekend. Here's a chart. With a 28" tire (common size) your 318 will be screaming at 4200 rpm at 65 mph.

I should say the reason was my Duster came with 3.23 peg leg rear.
So a local racer gave me the 5.13's to use as long as I gave them back. I went with 3.91 after a year or so.

Back in the 60's-70's you could spec ratios up to 5.13 in trucks from Ma Mopar.. We had a 1 ton dump truck with 5.13.
I do agree with the guys you will tire of them quite quickly with the engine revin' 4800 rpm at 40 mph.
A stock 318 is pretty much done at 4500 rpm

Keep the posi, sell the ring and pinion , and buy a gear set that’s reasonable like 3.23-3.91.

I should at least try the gear out before I sell it right?! Lol

What would be fair for the entire 3rd member?

It would be fun if you are going 1 mile to the store and back.. that's bout it.. i have 4.30s with 30" tires and it's barely tolerable (i will be changing them eventually)

318s don't blow up that easy. Try em.

Yes!
Do it just for fun and to say you did it.

I ran 5:13s in my Charger for awhile when I was just racing 1/8 mile.
They’re a blast if you can hook up and you’re not going too far.

That's awesome. Pop it in, go do wheelies, and then rip it out and drop in a 323. Sell the 537 ring and pinion.

Yeah that's my plan! Should be a blast and then probably be annoying lol.

What's a fair price based on the condition?

No. Plus, it looks a lot rust crusty. 5:37 gear ratio? Haven't heard that number before, 5:38? It's still not worth the time and money.

The most I ever saw was 6.17's. Chevy of course

Save your $$$....IMO......definitely not worth the effort.......refurbishing the third member, seals and bearings, and absolutely horrible fuel mileage and your labor effort .......
